How do you find love when someone doesn’t want you to be happy?

Patrick Edwards is dealing with a double whammy. Simon Dawson is a paramedic who doesn’t hesitate to help Patrick. After all, no one should live in a house where they don’t feel safe. Nic Starr invites you to meet her hero, Patrick Edwards!

Meet Patrick Edwards

“His gaze kept being drawn to the guy sitting diagonally opposite. It wasn’t his good looks that captured Simon’s attention, although he was most definitely the kind of guy Simon was attracted to. What piqued his interest was the guy’s engaging smile and the way he kept sneaking glances at Simon from under a sweep of hair that flopped across his forehead. He looked friendly, if not a little shy judging by the flush to his cheeks whenever Simon looked his way. What is his name again? Patrick, that’s it.”

Review:

I have this belief that nice guys DO finish first. Sure, I like that bad boy alpha, but I confess that I prefer to read stories about realistically written men who are genuinely nice guys. In my opinion, there are a few authors who excel at writing thoughtful, intelligent heroes who are kind and caring men and Nic Starr is one of them. I’ve read several books by this author and I’ve enjoyed every one of them. There is something special about the way the relationship develops between her two men and I always find myself quickly enthralled with the story they have to tell.

Both Simon and Patrick are amazing men. Patrick has a knack for being a tad bit clumsy but though he often finds himself in interesting situations, has a warmth and sweetness about him that I couldn’t help but love. On the other hand, Simon is a hero that was well worthy of Patrick. His thoughtfulness and drive to keep Patrick safe and to make him happy really resonated with me as a reader. It was so easy to fall in love with Simon and I totally understood why Patrick was so enamored with him as well.

The relationship between Simon and Patrick is the reason why I loved this story. They fit together so smoothly and the chemistry between them was so strong, it was clear to see that they belong together and I love that when it comes to reading romance.

There is also a mystery/suspenseful plot to the story. Though I figured out who the villain was pretty early on, I still enjoyed the twists and turns Ms. Starr gave me throughout the story. I thought Patrick was blind at times and his instinct to protect Simon was to push him away wasn’t his best move, but in many ways, it was a realistic one. How many of us don’t want to face what’s in front of us and because of it, turn a blind eye to the obvious?

If you are looking for a well-written, thoughtful romance than Patrick’s Savior is the book for you. Although it is the third book in the series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone story. I DO recommend reading all of the Heroes books because once you meet these guys, you too will love them as much as I do.

Highly Recommended!

Sometimes finding your place in the world can lead to love.

Kieran Walters is the illegitimate son of a successful businessman. Despite striving to win his father’s affection, a confrontation that has been years in the making leaves Kieran devastated to realize he will never be good enough. Jealous of the half brother he’s never met, and who most likely doesn’t know of his existence, Kieran vows to find out what makes his brother so special in their father’s eyes.

Darius Jensen manages a nightclub. He loves his job, but is reluctant to commit when given the opportunity to become a partner. His previous foray into business ownership with a boyfriend had disastrous results, and Darius is still paying the price, both financially and emotionally.

When Kieran starts working with Darius at Sparks, Darius shows him it’s not too late for Kieran to realize his dreams—the fulfilling career, a loving family, and someone who loves him for who he is. If only Kieran can convince Darius of the same thing. But before Kieran’s and Darius’s dreams can come true, Kieran needs to come clean with his brother and deal with the resulting fallout… which threatens his relationship with Darius.

Review:

I’ve read several books by Nic Starr and I’ve come to expect a few things from her stories. First, Nic writes compelling heroes that live and breathe off of the written page. It’s easy to get wrapped up into the lives of her characters and enjoy the story they have to tell.

Second, Nic writes a very heated, strong physical attraction between her men. By the ‘look’ Darius and Kieran gave one another and the flirtatious banter and heated glances they shared, it practically steamed up my computer screen! Who knew that something as innocent as Darius interviewing Kieran for a job would be sexy? The sizzling chemistry these two men shared was HOT!

Third, there is always a strong emotional bond between her heroes. I am first to admit that I’m a sucker for two men who genuinely like, respect and love one another. It was so easy to see how much Darius and Kieran were a perfect fit. I liked the way they were not only lovers…they were friends. It was obvious that there was something special between them.

Last, Nic’s stories are always fast-paced and well-written. From the first page, Kieran in particular, stole my heart. I couldn’t help but root for him and was thrilled that he was able to work through family and self-doubting issues and become a stronger man who knew he was worthy of love. Kieran does a lot of self-growth throughout the story and I enjoyed watching him evolve into a more confident man.

Darius was perfect for Kieran. Like Kieran, Darius has his own moments of self-growth. He learns to trust again and allows himself to take a chance on developing something special with Kieran.

All in all, Finding His Place is a gem of a story that is not to be missed! I loved these characters and highly enjoyed the story they had to tell. Finding His Place is a book in the Memories with the Breakfast Club series. I haven’t read the other books in the series, but if they are as good as this book was, it is definitely a series I’ll have to check into soon.

Characters: Nathan (Nate) Powell/Damien Sinclair
POV: 3rd
Sub-Genre: Contemporary, World of Love

Blurb:

Dr Nathan Powell is ready to settle down near his family, and hopefully find the man of his dreams. He returns to the small coastal town where he grew up, but while life is simpler than it was in the city, there are also complications—like patients’ reactions to an openly gay doctor. And like running into Nate’s first love, Damien, an out-and-proud local business owner who is unwilling to be any man’s dirty secret. The reunion reignites old desire even while it stirs up Nate’s guilt over the way things ended with Damien.

When Nate’s nephew runs away, Damien accompanies Nate on his mission to find the young man. The drive to Sydney, and the search of the city, gives Nate time to reconnect with Damien—and to wonder if he made the right decision years ago—when he determined a future for them was impossible. Is a fresh start realistic for two men in their forties? But before he can ponder the second chance they’ve been given, Nate must locate his nephew.

Review:

I love stories about second chances, and I’ve also enjoyed every story I’ve read of Nic Starr’s so when I was offered a review copy of Runaway I said yes please. An added bonus for me was the setting of New South Wales and Sydney as it’s somewhere I’ve been, although it was years ago. I read this story in one sitting, sitting up way too late, as I couldn’t put it down.

Nate and Damien’s story starts when they are teenagers, and even then what Nate feels for Damien isn’t just physical. I really liked the description of first love, and the warmth in Nate’s heart when he thinks about Damien. It’s very sad—but realistic—how a comment can make someone second guess themselves, not just in that moment, but tainting something good for years to come. I appreciated the author showing this important moment in Nate’s life before time jumping to the present, as it brought home just how much it affected him more than just being told about it would have.

The rest of the story takes place twelve years later, and with Nate and Damien much older. I enjoy stories with older characters so this hit the mark for me with that as well. I found their second chance to be a sweet romance, and I really liked the supporting characters of Nate’s sister Trish and his nephew Jackson, and how Jackson’s story tied in with Nate’s. Although the story is in Nate’s POV, Damien’s perspective came across very clearly. I liked how he supported Nate, but made it clear what he wanted from their relationship. The sense of family is very strong in this story, and is one of its many strengths.

I also loved the descriptions of the settings in the story, and the references to all things Australian. I found the story quite visual, and I could imagine each scene clearly as I was reading. I loved the ending, and although it is a HFN, I think it finished in the right place, with hope for the future. I do hope the author revisits these characters though—I’d love to see more of them.

I’d recommend Runaway to readers who like a contemporary romance set in Australia with older characters, an interesting supporting cast, a strong sense of family, and a sweet HFN with hope for the future.

Heroes: Book One

Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends, and settle down. It looks like his dreams have come true when paramedic Josh Campbell attends an accident at the school. It’s love at first sight, and a romance begins.

But Josh’s reluctance to come out to the brother who raised him, puts pressure on their fledgling relationship. While Charlie understands Josh’s concerns, he can’t help growing impatient. After all, Charlie came out years ago.

It’s not until Charlie confronts his own parents and realizes he hasn’t come to terms with their rejection that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie’s hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that to be part of a family, he doesn’t need his parents.

Review:

After reading Charlie’s Hero, Nic Starr has become an author I will actively look for when I’m in the mood for a thought-provoking, well-written romance. Charlie’s Hero is one of those books I know I’ll reach for again and again when I’m in the mood to read something special.

One of the reasons why I loved this book was the characters. I absolutely loved Charlie and Josh. Both men are likeable, humanly-flawed men that lived and breathed off of the written page. I loved that not only did they love one another, they genuinely liked one another too. They shared a mutual respect between them and I truly believe they fit together like a glove.

But even with their heated chemistry, they have problems. Josh is afraid to come out to his brother and this puts a strain on their relationship. Also, Charlie has his own issues with his family that made this a very interesting read.

All in all I really loved this book. It’s heavy on romance without being overly sweet and there is just enough angst in the story to make is a smooth and highly enjoyable read. Charlie’s Hero is the first book in the Heroes series and I can’t wait to read what Ms. Starr has in store for us next!
