TITLE: Heroes, Book 3: Patrick’s Savior
Author: Nic Starr
Sub-Genre: Contemporary with a touch of Mystery, Series
How do you find love when someone doesn’t want you to be happy?
Patrick Edwards is dealing with a double whammy. Unwanted attention from his housemate’s boyfriend is making him feel uncomfortable in his own home, and he’s facing uncertainty with his employment as an administrative assistant at the local elementary school. He finally breathes a sigh of relief when a friend puts him in contact with Simon, who has a vacant room.
Simon Dawson is a paramedic who doesn’t hesitate to help Patrick. After all, no one should live in a house where they don’t feel safe. Simon develops feelings for Patrick but doesn’t act on them—Patrick’s moved from a bad situation and doesn’t need his new housemate hitting on him. However, a weekend away changes everything when Simon realizes Patrick returns his feelings.
But someone doesn’t want Patrick and Simon to be happy. A series of strange letters arrive at the house, and things will get a lot worse before the two men get their happily ever after.
Although this is the third book in the series it can be read alone. However, having read book one—and still needing to read book two—I enjoyed catching up with other characters from the series. Simon and Patrick had caught my eye when I’d read Charlie’s Hero and I’d hoped they would get their own book.
Nic Starr is one of my go-to authors when I want a contemporary romance read, and she never disappoints. This is a lovely friends-to-lovers story with Simon and Patrick being both smitten with the other but not wanting to make that first step in case it ruins their friendship. I enjoyed reading about them finally taking the plunge and watching their relationship grow. I really felt for Simon especially when his past is revealed and a traumatic experience impacts him while he’s working.
I loved the supporting cast in this story and not just those I’d met before. There is a real feeling of family among this group of friends which left me with a lovely feel-good feeling reading about them interacting and looking out for each other. I suspect a couple of the new characters will end up together and I’m hoping the author writes more in this series so I can find out!
Although I guessed who was behind the letters etc fairly early on, the author throws in a few red herrings which had me doubting on occasion whether I was on the right track or not. I had to keep reading through the reveal as, although I trusted the author to keep these guys safe, I wanted to make sure they were. The HEA is a lovely family affair and suits the story perfectly.
I’d recommend Patrick’s Savior to readers who enjoy contemporary romance with likable characters, a touch of mystery, and a real sense of family is not only the one you’re born into but the friends you make along the way.
