— It’s clowns. It’s a gangbang. It’s helium balloons. —

Some nights just don’t go as planned. It’s Halloween and Kyle’s rushing home to see his boyfriend after a late evening shift at work. As usual, he takes a shortcut through the local park, but a poster informing about a killer clown in the area makes him apprehensive about being alone in the dark. It’s only when he discovers there is a man in a clown costume following him that he panics. Soon, it turns out his cackling shadow isn’t the only circus freak hiding in the dark, but what does a bunch of crazy clowns do when they catch you?

Review:

I’ve read several books by KA Merikan and I have to say they have a very unique voice. Not only do they write extremely hot sex scenes, but their characters are always interesting and sometimes more than a little quirky. (Which is one reason why I like them) They also have an underlying humor to their voice that appeals to me, so when I was asked to read and review, Clown’d, by them I admit, I jumped at the chance to do it.

Since I don’t want to spoil anything, I’m going to tread lightly with this review. So, forgive me if I’m being a little evasive about the story, but I’m determined to do my best without giving too much away.

Now, for those who follow this site and have read my reviews know that I’m not really into ménages or even erotica in general. Yes, I am a reader who loves Disney movies and thrives on reading romance…BUT…sometimes it’s good to read something outside of my comfort zone. I will say that I probably would have passed this book up had I not been totally addicted to these authors’ books, and in hindsight, I’m really glad I didn’t.
In all honesty, this book really isn’t made to be taken seriously. Yes, there is a scary part in the story (at first) but soon, it turns into a seriously hot read with some creative uses for balloons from clowns.

Clowns. I’ve never thought them particularly sexy, but leave it to KA Merikan to make me second guess this. I know I’ll never be able to go to the Circus with my niece and see clowns again without thinking of this book! (Is that a good thing?) What I really liked about it was the intensity and fun Kyle has. I recommend this read for those who crave something different and uniquely spicy to read. Because when you read this book you need to take it as it is, which is sexy, disturbing and fun story that will give you an hour or so of pure erotic pleasure.

KA Merikan answers Three Burning Questions about their book Special Needs

When the authors KA Merikan offered to give me three questions about their latest release, Special Needs, I knew I had to take them up on it. I was careful to ask questions that wouldn’t spoil the book, but still give informative answers that we’d all enjoy.

1. What inspired you to write Special Needs?

At some point, Agnes started reading books with a disability theme, and found that most of them focused on that topic only, as if being disabled was the definition of who the characters were. It reminded us how gay characters are often pictured in tv shows, when their whole story arc is wrapped around being gay. So the initial idea we had was to write a novel with a disabled main character, who would also be a cool, alternative guy with lots of personality, not a ‘token guy in a wheelchair’. When Liam and Ryan get together, the reader will know exactly why that happened, and throughout the book, we tried to show just how much in common those two have.

2. Ryan is an empathic and likeable character who has a few secrets. How much research did you do to realistically portray Ryan’s disability?

We both enjoy learning about sexuality: from ‘weird’ fetishes, to uncommon sexual lifestyles and experiences, so research was pure pleasure 😉 We watched quite a few documentaries on how being paralyzed affects people’s sex life and what kind of spinal injuries are out there, as there are many different kinds.

On our tumble through the Internet though, we found lots of information on all sorts of disability fetishists and that was what made Ryan into the character he is. Instead of having Ryan paralyzed, we decided to create three different layers of disability in him and as the story progresses, each one gets peeled back and unfolded. But to know what they are, you will have to read the book! 🙂

3. What do you hope your readers will get out of the story? When is the second book due to be released? (Notice how I managed to slip one more question in there? 😉 )

Our main goal is to entertain our readers, so hopes are they will laugh a lot, and cry a little 😉 I think at the core of everything we write is the idea, that as long as you don’t hurt other people, you can be whatever you are, so we hope ‘Special Needs’ can put that across without bashing readers over the head with moralizing. This topic will be developed further in the second volume, which should be out by the end of 2013.

Thank you, Ladies! We appreciate you taking the time to answer our questions:) We are looking forward to learning more about you and your books during your spotlight on August 6th!!

— Caretaking. You’re doing it wrong. —

Liam slept with his boss. Again. And lost his job because of it. Again. Set on changing his ways and tired of sleeping in his car, he applies for a job as a live-in caretaker, even though he has no experience in it whatsoever. He has a lot of practice in lying his way out of any situation though. Only problem is, his new boss – wheelchair bound owner of a sex hotel – is gay, cute, funny and oh, so fuckable! There is only one logical solution to Liam’s dilemma – pretending he’s straight. Brilliant!

When Ryan inherited his aunt’s B&B, he thought he’d hit the jackpot by changing it into a fetish sex hotel. Things didn’t go as planned though, all of his marketing efforts seem to fail, and the debt is mounting up. Being a wheelchair user doesn’t help in actively promoting his hotel, but his luck starts to change when he hires a new caretaker. Liam is open-minded, helpful and caring. All that Ryan needs from a caretaker to kickstart his business, but things would all be a lot simpler if he didn’t start crushing on his new employee. And even if, in some other dimension, Liam did return his feelings, how long can Ryan keep his fetish a secret?

The web of lies they weave around each other is more bondage than any of them enjoy.

“Special Needs” is book one out of a two part series.

Review:

Once in a while I come across a book that lives long within my mind after I’ve finished reading it. When I read the blurb to Special Needs by KA Merikan, I knew I had to read it. Once I received my copy, I was only going to take a peek at it to check it out, but instead I was immediately fascinated with the lives of these two characters and I found myself unable to put it down. So, my first warning to anyone that’s about to read this book is…make sure you allot plenty of time to read it from cover to cover, because once you start it, you won’t be able to stop until you finish it.

The blurb does an outstanding job at describing the gist of the storyline. There are MANY things it doesn’t tell you and many interesting twists and turns in the story that left this reader surprised, so I have to admit this will be a difficult review to write. Why? Because I don’t want to spoil anything for you should you decide to read it…and I hope you do. I will say you’ll be intrigued by both Ryan and Liam. They are both extremely well-written characters that are easy to like and in some ways, relate too. Neither man are perfect and both do some things that made me want to reach into my ereader and give them a good shake for, but all in all, it’s easy to look past their misgivings and love the characters for who they really are.

When Liam applies for the job as Ryan’s caretaker, he’s literally living out of his car. Liam has a bad habit of falling for and sleeping with his bosses. Because of this, it never ends well for him and he always ends up jobless, broke and alone. Determined to have a fresh start, Liam decides to hide his sexuality from Ryan during the interview even though he knows Ryan is gay and very attracted to him. Liam believes he can keep his own attraction to Ryan at bay, but as they get to know each other and the more Liam is around Ryan, he begins to struggle with his feelings and wonders what the consequences might bring should he come clean with Ryan and tell him the truth.

Ryan is a very complex character. On one hand he’s almost naïve and has a sweetness about him that makes you want to give him a hug. On the other, he is very outspoken about what he likes, his sexuality and is a proud owner of a kinky Bed and Breakfast that caters to all sorts of sexual fantasies. Plus, he likes to be catered to and has a tendency to relish in any positive attention he receives because of his physical limitations.

The relationship that develops between the two men is a well-paced, steady one. There is camaraderie between them that I really liked as well the sizzling attraction that burns between them. I loved the pacing of their relationship and enjoyed watching them learn to trust each other, become friends and then lovers.

There is also a lightness about the book that I really enjoyed. The sometimes witty banter between the characters made me chuckle and even laugh out loud at times. Also, there are some very touching, heartfelt scenes that really resonated with me as a reader.

Now, here is the part where I have to be careful with my review. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say things aren’t always what they seem. Also, the book ends with a huge cliffhanger that left me wanting to screech with frustration because I longed to see what was going to happen next! Because it is a cliffhanger, I hope that this does not deter some readers, because it such a good book and you will be anticipating the next book as much as I am!! There is still so much we don’t know and so much that needs to be revealed in the next book that I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series.

I’ve read several books by the writing team of KA Merikan and I’ve loved them all. Special Needs is officially one of my favorite books I’ve read this year and it’s definitely going to have a place on my keeper shelf. I highly recommend this book to those who are looking for a sexy, fun and well-written read that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Review:

Off with their Heads! is the second book I’ve read by the writing team of KA Merikan and I have to say, I’ve really loved everything I’ve read from them so far. Their stories are very fast-paced, interesting and an all-around fun and sexy read! The blurb does an outstanding job at describing the story, so I won’t rehash it. Instead, I thought I’d talk about what I liked about this book and why I’d recommend it.

I loved the strong chemistry between the two heroes. From the first moment they met, Clint found himself immediately fascinated by the somewhat odd, but sexy Xavier. Even though he’s unsure of Xavier and his motives for wanting ten zombie heads, he can’t help but be intrigued by Xavier and Clint soon finds himself doing things he never thought he do before.

Both men are passionate about their careers. Clint is a medical student and Xavier is…well you’ll have to read it and see what Xavier does. I will say that I liked Xavier’s passionate nature as well as his drive to stand up for what he believes in made him a very likeable hero for me. I understood why Clint fell for his offbeat personality and somewhat snarky attitude. On the other hand, Clint is ambitious about his own career and I liked the way he was able to relax and have fun in Xavier’s presence. In all honesty, I think both men were a little too serious about their own personal lives before they met each other. Yes, they’re still ambitious, but they also are able to relax and enjoy each other instead of being so serious all the time.

One of the things I loved about this book was the surprising humorous undertone the story has. I found myself laughing out loud several times as well as enjoying the sometimes feisty banter between the two heroes. Also, the backstory of how the zombie epidemic is very well thought out and interesting to read. I do want to point out that there are some gory moments in the book (Hey, it’s a zombie book, so what do you expect…LOL) but I thought the storyline was very original and I loved every moment of it. The only reason why I didn’t give this book five stars is: the ending was a little abrupt for me. It has a happy ending, but it left things unanswered and I wanted to read more about this couple and the world they live in.

Off With Their Heads! is set in the same universe their Scavenger books are set in, but it can definitely be read as a stand-alone book. Once you read this one though, you’ll definitely want to read their Scavenger series. I’ve read the first book, Scavenger: July and will be reading the second book Scavenger: August soon. After reading this book, I’m really looking forward to it.

Off With Their Heads! is a funny, sexy book with plenty of action and adventure! I loved every moment I spent reading this book and I didn’t want it to end! KA Merikan has become one of those authors I’m definitely keeping an eye out for. I love their writing style and their inventive, sexy storytelling abilities have gained them a new fan. Highly Recommended!
