Review:

I’ve read a few of Derek Adams books and I’ve enjoyed them all. Mr. Adams writes erotic, sexy stories that leave you panting for more. Mr. Adams does not disappoint in this short story, The Mark of the Dragon. At just under 25 pages, it has enough erotic content to make you want to turn off the heat switch it over to the air conditioner! Whew!

At first glance one might think that Grant Foster has it all. He’s popular, smart and falling into the expected footsteps that his family expects of him. When he catches the eye of the ‘Punk’ in the shower, life as he knows it will never be the same.

The story is told through Grant’s eyes. Because of this, we really get a feel that there is more to Grant than meets the eye. Although he does what is expected of him, he’s restless and unsure that doing what is expected of him is really the right thing for him. When he and meets the sexy man with the dragon tattoo, (who he and his friends have nicknamed him ‘The Punk’) Grant is swept up into the desire and attraction he feels for him. Being with this man really brings out Grant’s inner desires and makes him want to branch out and be himself.

Because this is Grant’s story we learn very little about the mysterious man. But we do learn that because of him, Grant becomes freer to be himself. I admit, I do wish the book had been longer. It does end rather abruptly, and left me wanting to know more about them and what was in store for them. (Shhh…Between us, I’m secretly hoping for a sequel!)

If you are looking for a hot, erotic short story then this book is definitely for you. It would be a great choice in you’re in the mood to read about a hot encounter on a cold winter’s night.

Recommended.

Review:

The blurb pretty much sums up is erotic and intriguing short story. I’ve read a few books by Derek Adams in the past, and since this is the first short glimpse in a series to come, he definitely caught the attention of this reader.

Although Grant should be happy in his life…he’s not. He’s popular, smart and expected to achieve the high expectations his family expects from him. Grant is basically going through a routine in life. He’s restless and unsatisfied, but when he runs into a sexy man he only knows as The Punk he is fascinated by the man’s piercings and larger than life Dragon tattoo.

What follows is several erotic encounters between the two of them that totally knocks Grant’s conformed life off of it’s axis. Before he knows it, Grant is almost powerless to stop the sizzling passion between them, even though he suspects his life will never be the same again.

As I mentioned before, this is the beginning of a series. It definitely left this reader with many unanswered questions and I am anticipating what Mr. Adams has in store for us in the future. Since it is told in first person, we only get Grant’s point of view, so Dragon remains a big mystery. Mr. Adams definitely is a big tease and I’m looking forward to reading this series.

If you’re looking for a very sexy, erotic read, The Mark of the Dragon, is definitely a short story to consider. This is definitely an Erotic Romance. There is a lot of sex in this short story. The sex and chemistry between Grant and Dragon practically steamed up my computer screen, it was so HOT. Now, I’m ready to read more about these two men and anxious to see what we have in store for us next.

Stealing Home by Derek Adams

Title: Stealing Home
Author: Derek Adams
Publisher: eXtasy Books
Pages: 31
Characters: Pat Chandler, Marcus Campbell
POV: 1st
Sub-Genre: Contemporary, Erotic Romance
Kisses: 5

Blurb:

All reporter Pat Chandler ever wanted to do was cover a men’s fashion show in New York City. So what the hell is he doing on the spring training beat in Yuma, Arizona?

Pat Chandler doesn’t know first base from a pop fly. That never mattered until now, when his boss takes him off a plum assignment covering a major fashion show and banishes him to the wilds of Arizona. Instead of interviewing important designers, he’s charged with getting the goods on a rookie pitcher from the middle of nowhere. Things go from bad to worse for Pat, but then he meets the rookie and everything begins to change as Pat learns to steal home.

Review:

Stealing Home by Derek Adams is a short, sexy and fun story that is perfect for a quick summer read! I was immediately swept up into Pat and Marcus’ story and I hated to see it come to an end.

But I will say that at first glance, I wondered how the sophisticated Pat and the down to earth Marcus would have anything in common. Pat is a reporter who is comfortable doing stories on fashion than a story about up and coming baseball players. He’s not happy that he’s forced to work a story in what he believes is in the middle of nowhere, in the heat, watching a game he really has no interest in. But when he meets the charming and very sexy Marcus, who is a rookie pitcher, he quickly becomes enchanted by him.

Marcus is more comfortable at his farm than he is on the baseball field. Although he enjoys baseball, he longs to be home, which is where his heart really is. But once these two men meet, sparks fly and as they find a common ground, both men are soon faced with the choice of what kind of future a reporter and a baseball player can really have together.

The story is told in first person through Pat’s eyes. I thought the author did a great job at making Pat a likeable, humorous and interesting character. Also, Pat is a very good narrator, which made me feel like I wasn’t missing anything (especially Marcus’ thoughts) and as a reader, I really appreciated that.

Even though they seem like very different men, Pat and Marcus really seemed to fit well together. Opposites definitely attract and in this story, they definitely made a great couple. I liked the steamy chemistry they had and enjoyed the quick-witted banter they had between them. I do wish the story had been longer. I would have loved to see how things turned out for them six months down the road. I do hope the author will revisit these characters one day because I would love to see what’s in store for them next!

Highly Recommended!

Retreat to Island County by Derek Adams

Title: Retreat to Island County
Author: Derek Adams
Publisher: MLR Press
Pages: 53,000 words
Characters: Ben & Rick
POV: 1st
Sub-Genre: Contemporary Romance, Mystery
Kisses: 4.5

Blurb:

Is it possible for two men to overcome betrayal and tragedy to find happiness?

One man is betrayed by a faithless lover. Another is devastated when his lover is lost to an act of terrorism. Can they put the past behind them and come together to forge a new bond? Ben and Rick must not only fight the ghosts of their pasts, but also face a real and present danger when a child is kidnapped by his white supremacist father. Will they be able to overcome the sinister forces that threaten to destroy those they love and keep them apart forever?

Review:

Unlike a typical romance, you don’t meet Rick until chapter three. Instead, you are introduced to Ben and how he loses his virginity. Ben is very endearing, a little naïve, and makes mistakes like the rest of us. During the first few chapters, I came to care for Ben and what happened to him, making the discovery of his lover’s faithlessness affect me more.

Ben’s forays into singlehood, hook-ups, and dating were life-like, and the mention of internet dating well done. I had to laugh at that one.

Derek Adams writes with a subtle sense of humour and the clear imagery combined with a personal way of telling the story really drew me into the story and kept me looking forward to the next scene even as I enjoyed the one I read.

This is not a flowery, overly-emotional story but rather a strong, realistic story about a man who eventually comes out of heartbreak to be stronger, happier, and with a community he is happy to call his own. I would definitely recommend this story to anyone who likes contemporary novellas and realistic characters.

The Infinity Incident by Derek Adams

Select cover to purchase

Title: The Infinity Incident
Author: Derek Adams
Publisher: eXstasy Books
Pages: 28
Characters: Stanley (Lex Caldar), Lotar
POV: 1st and 3rd
Sub-Genre: Sci-fi, Erotic Romance
Kisses: 3.75

Blurb:

Wimp or superhero? Victim or conqueror? Loser or sexual athlete? When the real world collides with the virtual, what’s a guy to do?

Geeky Stanley longs to escape the dreary, bully-plagued reality that makes his daily life miserable. His only escape is the video arcade where he slides into virtual reality and morphs into Lex Caldar, superhero. When a new game arrives, Stanley accepts the challenge and pushes that reality to a new level—a level he may choose to inhabit forever.

Review:

The Infinity Incident is a fast-paced, guilty pleasure to read from start to finish. Stanley is a geek who is addicted to playing video games. He is known to spend hours upon hours at the arcade, losing himself completely in virtual reality games. Unfortunately for Stanley, he is frequently picked on, but this does not deter him from playing the games that he loves.
After one particularly bad bullying incident, Stanley is still able to sneak into the arcade he loves so he can be the first person to play the video game, Infinity. There he can be the superhero, Lex Caldar, where he can save the day with his amazing fighting skills and quick thinking. As soon as he starts the game, he finds himself immediately in the medic room where a handsome alien stranger, Lotar, insists that they were in the middle of bonding before Lex was supposedly called off to save the ship Lex commands. They soon start their bonding process again, where Lex and Lotar become mated together. But, when push comes to shove, will Stanley (Lex) be able to stay in the world where he is not only a hero, but with the alien-mate of his dreams, or will he have to come home and be the lonely, geeky Stanley once again?

I really liked this book a lot. Even though it is a very short story, I was intrigued by the characters in it, and enjoyed the sizzling chemistry between Lex and Lotar. Whew! The sex between them is very HOT and plentiful during the course of the story. I do wish that this had been a longer book. I would have loved to have read more about the world that Stanley (Lex) now inhabits and seen some real characterization in the book. But, I still really enjoyed the escapism that The Infinity Incident gave me for a short time, and any sci-fi and erotic (heavy on the erotic) romance fan will enjoy the fun romp that this book really is.

An Early Snow by Derek Adams

Title: An Early Snow
Author: Derek Adams
Publisher: MLR Press
Pages: 25
Characters: Vic and Chris
POV: 3rd
Sub-Genre: Holiday Contemporary
Kisses: 3

Blurb:

Vic comes across Kris, a handsome young runaway, as he is preparing to shut up his restaurant for the night. He startles Kris as he rummages in the dumpster, scrounging for food. Kris tries to flee, falls, and is knocked unconscious. Vic takes the young man in – ‘just for one night’ – and their relationship quickly develops into more than a simple friendship. Vic, conscious of the age difference between them, does his best to avoid romantic entanglements, but Kris has very different ideas. Will Kris prevail, or will the unseasonable chill extend its frosty grip to their burgeoning relationship?

Review:

An Early Snow by Derek Adams is a short fast Christmas story about a young eighteen year old boy, Kris and the man who saved him from possibly dying in a back alley in the middle of a winter storm. The man who saved him is thirty something Vic, a restaurant owner and all around nice guy, who was recently dumped by his lover of ten years, took the time from his life to aid a young man living on the streets and going through dumpsters for food. Not that he really had a choice, the poor kid slipped and fell on the ice and knocked himself out when he was trying to run away from being caught digging in the garbage. Well Vic brings him into the warmth of the restaurant and feeds him, puts him up and the rest is as we say history.

Kris ends up going to work for Vic as a way of payment for his living arrangements and hot food, even clothes. And that leads into a love affair that ends with a happy for now.

If relationships with a huge age gap bug you, then you may want to skip this or overlook it. With short stories it’s so hard to fully flesh the characters including what they may be or may not be feeling and in this story that seems to be the case. We aren’t sure if Kris really does like Vic or if he’s just grateful he isn’t living on the streets and offers himself as a way of saying thanks and finding a way to keep off the streets. However it goes, it’s a fast read, and it has the holiday message very clear for us all to see.

Heart’s Desire by Derek Adams

Title: Hearts Desire
Author: Derek Adams
Publisher: MLR Press
Pages: 19
Characters:
POV: 1st
Kisses: 3

Blurb:

Eddie Wickham, branded as queer from the age of five, has always been an outcast. When his hopes of escape from the confines of his narrow-minded small town life are dashed by a sex scandal, Eddie is forced to watch as his life slips away, day by endless Day. Then Charlie Ferris, another young man with a hard luck background, stands up for Eddie in a barroom brawl and opens a world of romantic possibilities.

Will the two men be able to face down small town prejudice to achieve love and happiness as they both seek out their heart’s desire?

Review:

In open honesty this short story is one of those that left me with my head cocked to the side and wondering what it was about. Told from the view point of Eddie in the first person this tale is a lot of telling and little showing but it does tell a somewhat sad story of how Eddie has been picked on and bullied throughout his school years. He makes a stupid decision one night as a senior in high school and all his dreams are shot to shit. He’s a twenty-four year old telling his tale and how he meets another man with a sad background and how the two of them find satisfaction with one another. I can’t call it love, perhaps lust, but the ending does make it possible for the author to bring us more of Eddie and Charlie.

Second Chance by Derek Adams

Title: Second Chance
Author: Derek Adams
Publisher: MLR Press
Pages: 28
Characters: Nick Harding, Matt Langford
POV: 1st
Book Cover Rating: 4
Kisses: 4

Blurb:

The heroic rescue of an elderly shopkeeper brings Nick Harding face to face with handsome detective Matt Langford. What begins as a simple statement to the police quickly escalates into an all-night ordeal when Nick is rushed to the hospital for a suspected concussion. Upon his release, Nick is surprised and grateful to discover that Detective Langford is waiting to take him back to his home. As time passes, the two meet again and again, until a date becomes inevitable. The date leads to drinks back at Nick’s condo and the sexual heat that has been building between the two men erupts into a night of unstoppable passion.

Review:

Second Chance is a sweet love story about a civilian, Nick who saves the day when he catches a man who robbed an elderly gentleman’s store one evening by chasing him down and keeping him subdued until the police show up. Matt Langford is the handsome cop who interrogates Nick to see what he remembers of the crime but sadly, Nick can’t remember much. Matt offers Nick a ride home and once there, Nick stumbles and Matt is there to catch him and rush him off to the hospital. While Nick is being checked out in the ER, Matt is pacing the waiting room.

What entails is a sweet love story between the two men. They take their time learning one another finding excuses to meet up as often as they can. I liked the characters, but would have liked to get to know them a bit more. For a short story though, the author did a great job with the plot and narrative. A fast read and enjoyable story.
