— Caretaking. Like a boss. —

So, Ryan isn’t disabled. Okay, he is, but he’s only got a foot missing, that’s hardly a reason to pretend he’s paraplegic and ride around in a wheelchair! Now Liam has to deal with being lied to since the moment they met, and he is not a happy camper. He doesn’t understand why sweet, innocent Ryan would do such a thing. What if there are other things his boyfriend lied about? Or ex-boyfriend for that matter.

Ryan is in a state of complete panic at the sole thought of losing Liam, his first proper boyfriend ever. But the show must go on and after the fire in his hotel, Ryan can’t only focus on his love life. He’s a serious businessman after all. Marketing, networking and promoting will be his new love life. Who needs a boyfriend anyway, when in the end, every guy is either a devotee, or freaks out about his transability? Yet… maybe if Liam stayed around the hotel, they could at least make up and become friends.

There is one more option to consider – walking. If Ryan started walking, would Liam want to be with him again? But how far can he bend to Liam’s wishes before he breaks?

“Special Needs” is book two out of a two part series.

If you follow this site, you know that I really like the stories that these two authors create. KA Merikan writes stories that often push boundaries and are often thought provoking. In my opinion, Special Needs 2 is one of those stories.

The story begins basically where Special Needs 1 ends. Liam has discovered that Ryan has lied about his disability and because he doesn’t think he can trust him, they break up. This is devastating to both characters and because Ryan wants Liam in his life (no matter how he has him) he hires him as his personal chef and continues to live his life in a wheelchair.

As the story continues, the two men dance around each others’ feelings as well as their own. Liam is confused by his feelings for Ryan and hates that although Ryan lied about his disability, becomes determined for Ryan to embrace the fact that he can walk and live his life a honest one. At first, Ryan doesn’t want to walk, so he balks at Liam’s insistence that he should, but once he realizes that if he does, he and Liam have a chance of actually getting back together, Ryan agrees to try.

I’m stopping my description of the story here. There is A LOT of things that go on between these two characters. They both continue to grow and evolve as men as the story progresses. I know there are those of you who are probably wondering how in the world Liam could ever forgive Ryan, as well as, wonder how me as a reader would continue to like him as well. I have to say as we learn more about what makes Ryan tick and his reasoning behind his actions, I felt sympathy towards him. I found myself wanting him to be happy and even wanting Liam to realize that there was more to Ryan than meets the eye. Ryan’s pain really broke my heart and I couldn’t help but want to reach into the story and give him a big hug.

Now, please don’t get me wrong. I hated that Ryan lied to Liam and I actually felt like rejoicing when they actually ‘listen’ to one another. Even though Ryan did what he did, Liam was no angel either, but in all honesty, this is one of the reasons why I loved this book. Both Ryan and Liam are very flawed men, but together they want to be better men, not only for themselves, but for each other.

I loved this book. Special Needs 2 is truly a beautifully written story that lived and breathed in my heart. If you are looking for a thought provoking, well-written romance with plenty of angst, romance, sweet moments and hot sex, Special Needs 1 and 2 are definitely the books for you.

I highly recommend reading the first book before tackling this one. This way you will fully understand the dynamics between these two likeable, but very humanly flawed men.

Highly Recommended!

— Caretaking. You’re doing it wrong. —

Liam slept with his boss. Again. And lost his job because of it. Again. Set on changing his ways and tired of sleeping in his car, he applies for a job as a live-in caretaker, even though he has no experience in it whatsoever. He has a lot of practice in lying his way out of any situation though. Only problem is, his new boss – wheelchair bound owner of a sex hotel – is gay, cute, funny and oh, so fuckable! There is only one logical solution to Liam’s dilemma – pretending he’s straight. Brilliant!

When Ryan inherited his aunt’s B&B, he thought he’d hit the jackpot by changing it into a fetish sex hotel. Things didn’t go as planned though, all of his marketing efforts seem to fail, and the debt is mounting up. Being a wheelchair user doesn’t help in actively promoting his hotel, but his luck starts to change when he hires a new caretaker. Liam is open-minded, helpful and caring. All that Ryan needs from a caretaker to kickstart his business, but things would all be a lot simpler if he didn’t start crushing on his new employee. And even if, in some other dimension, Liam did return his feelings, how long can Ryan keep his fetish a secret?

The web of lies they weave around each other is more bondage than any of them enjoy.

“Special Needs” is book one out of a two part series.

Once in a while I come across a book that lives long within my mind after I’ve finished reading it. When I read the blurb to Special Needs by KA Merikan, I knew I had to read it. Once I received my copy, I was only going to take a peek at it to check it out, but instead I was immediately fascinated with the lives of these two characters and I found myself unable to put it down. So, my first warning to anyone that’s about to read this book is…make sure you allot plenty of time to read it from cover to cover, because once you start it, you won’t be able to stop until you finish it.

The blurb does an outstanding job at describing the gist of the storyline. There are MANY things it doesn’t tell you and many interesting twists and turns in the story that left this reader surprised, so I have to admit this will be a difficult review to write. Why? Because I don’t want to spoil anything for you should you decide to read it…and I hope you do. I will say you’ll be intrigued by both Ryan and Liam. They are both extremely well-written characters that are easy to like and in some ways, relate too. Neither man are perfect and both do some things that made me want to reach into my ereader and give them a good shake for, but all in all, it’s easy to look past their misgivings and love the characters for who they really are.

When Liam applies for the job as Ryan’s caretaker, he’s literally living out of his car. Liam has a bad habit of falling for and sleeping with his bosses. Because of this, it never ends well for him and he always ends up jobless, broke and alone. Determined to have a fresh start, Liam decides to hide his sexuality from Ryan during the interview even though he knows Ryan is gay and very attracted to him. Liam believes he can keep his own attraction to Ryan at bay, but as they get to know each other and the more Liam is around Ryan, he begins to struggle with his feelings and wonders what the consequences might bring should he come clean with Ryan and tell him the truth.

Ryan is a very complex character. On one hand he’s almost naïve and has a sweetness about him that makes you want to give him a hug. On the other, he is very outspoken about what he likes, his sexuality and is a proud owner of a kinky Bed and Breakfast that caters to all sorts of sexual fantasies. Plus, he likes to be catered to and has a tendency to relish in any positive attention he receives because of his physical limitations.

The relationship that develops between the two men is a well-paced, steady one. There is camaraderie between them that I really liked as well the sizzling attraction that burns between them. I loved the pacing of their relationship and enjoyed watching them learn to trust each other, become friends and then lovers.

There is also a lightness about the book that I really enjoyed. The sometimes witty banter between the characters made me chuckle and even laugh out loud at times. Also, there are some very touching, heartfelt scenes that really resonated with me as a reader.

Now, here is the part where I have to be careful with my review. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say things aren’t always what they seem. Also, the book ends with a huge cliffhanger that left me wanting to screech with frustration because I longed to see what was going to happen next! Because it is a cliffhanger, I hope that this does not deter some readers, because it such a good book and you will be anticipating the next book as much as I am!! There is still so much we don’t know and so much that needs to be revealed in the next book that I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series.

I’ve read several books by the writing team of KA Merikan and I’ve loved them all. Special Needs is officially one of my favorite books I’ve read this year and it’s definitely going to have a place on my keeper shelf. I highly recommend this book to those who are looking for a sexy, fun and well-written read that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
