Review:

When it comes to reading an anthology, it easily turn into a tricky read for me. Though I’ve read many of them, most leave me wanting for more. I’m glad to say that 2016 Top Ten Gay Romance Anthology was filled with many great stories with characters that I really found myself rooting for. Each and every story was interesting and every story was well worth reading.

Me and My Big Mouth by Becky Black

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Kisses

This is the first story I’ve read by this author and I really liked it. I thought the characters were interesting and I liked the main character, Max the best. He’s funny and has a way of putting his foot in his mouth and I thought his honesty and bluntness was refreshing. I also like the May/December aspect of the story, as well as, the ‘opposites attract’ storyline. He and Owen are a good match and though it ended on a HFN ending, I have high hopes for them.

Captive by TA Creech
Rating: 5 out of 5 Kisses

WOW! This is the first story I’ve read by TA Creech and after reading Captive, it won’t be my last! I loved the descriptive storytelling ability this author has and I was immediately wrapped up into these characters lives. The world-building the author created for this science fiction romance was great and I enjoyed watching Justin and Sajah’s relationship develop. For a short story it is pretty well-written and balanced…selfishly I wish it had been longer…I loved it!

Lost Love, Love Found by Rebecca James
Rating: 4

Lost Love, Love Found is a sweet holiday story between to heroes that learn to trust in the power of love. Dane’s wife died three years ago and he’s been living with both of sorrow of losing her and the guilt of not being honest with her about several things. *Read it and find out what they are* When he spots a homeless man on the side of the road, Dane’s protective instincts take over and he decides to give into the holiday spirit and help the man, Sayer, out.

I liked the chemistry the two men shared together. There is an instant emotional bond between them and I enjoyed the banter they shared together. Though I like an insta-love romance, I thought this one was a tad bit on the rushed side…especially toward the end.

Accidentally His by Shawn Lane
Rating: 3.25 out of 5 Kisses!

When I first started this story, I thought I would love it. Then as the story progressed, our main hero, Kirk’s, attitude began to change and was a bit of a jerk to Elijah. It was strange because one moment Kirk acts like he wants to get to know Elijah and is fascinated with him and then next *when he has Elijah interested* Kirk doesn’t call and acts kind of jerky…wth? Though I thought Elijah was so sweet, the character that intrigued me the most was Toby, who was a secondary character. I would love to read his story. I have conflicting feelings about this read because I really liked Kirk in the beginning, but not so much in the middle and end.

Because of Kirk’s insensitivity I thought Elijah deserved better and though he had an explanation for his showing lack of interest, I never got back on board with him. I’m sorry. Maybe if the book was longer the characterization would have been more fleshed out and I would have enjoyed it better. In the end, I liked the story, I just didn’t love it like I thought I would in the beginning. Having said this, there will be many people who will love Kirk and Elijah’s relationship. Ms. Lane is a solid storyteller and knows how to write heated chemistry that can leap out of the written page. I’m sure there are many fans of hers that will enjoy the story Kirk had to tell.

A pint of beer, a bag of chips and thou by JL Merrow
Rating: 4 out of 5 Kisses!

A Pint of Beer, A Bag of Chips and Thou is a sweet and fast-paced story about a struggling musician and his quirky family. To make extra money, Liam plays at the local tube. He enjoys playing for strangers, hoping to make their day a little brighter by the music he shares with them. Also, he has been watching a sexy older man walk by daily who seems to enjoy the songs he plays. When his three lovable older female relatives decide to take matters into their own hands, will Liam’s hope the sexy man will finally speak to him?

This story is told in first person through Liam’s eyes. I enjoyed the story he had to tell and loved the ‘coven’ of female relatives who joyfully interfere with his life. Liam’s romance with Neil is a sweet thing to watch too. I enjoyed their heated chemistry and the easy banter they shared between them. JL Merrow wrote a feel-good, quirky story with lovable characters and two heroes you can’t help but love.

For the Last Time by AR Moler
Rating: 2.5 out of 5 Kisses!

For the Last Time spans Mark and Scott’s friendship over the past twenty years. It is a friends to lovers romance that had great potential to be an amazing story. But because of the length and because it felt rushed at times, I thought it took away from the story Scott and Mark had to tell. Also, because both men tried to push aside their physical and emotional attraction towards one another, they live as straight men who are married *more than once in one heroes case* and are still married as they explore their sexuality and feelings for one another. I’m not crazy about cheating heroes. In a way I understood why they lived in fear and in the closet for so long and if the story had been more fleshed out and longer, I might would have gotten on board with them more than I did. In the end, I liked the two men and in some ways their story is a sweet one. The author has a way of writing compelling characters who live and breathe off of the written page. I just wish it had been a full length novel.

First and Goal by Terry O’Reilly
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Kisses!

First and Goal is a sexy short story that packed a lot of punch. I really enjoyed reading about the two men and was intrigued watching their relationship develop as the story was told. Since Brad is an NFL player who is not out of the closet, his boyfriend Darrin, must keep their relationship under wraps. This can lead to problems and Darrin *who is a dancer* begins to feel the strain of having to live a life separate from Brad a secret. Darrin longs to be together all of the time and to begin to really share their life together, but because Brad is afraid of the ramifications of coming out, Darrin continues to push his own wants aside.

Because Brad feels like he needs to keep his sexuality and Darrin a secret, this story could have been one sided. But because Brad is a likeable man and it is obvious that keeping away from Darrin hurts him too, it was easy to understand the predicament they were in. I liked how the story resolved itself and loved the chemistry these two men shared together. First and Goal is a quick and sexy read that is easy to like and so enjoyable to read.

I’m looking forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

It’s Not Yule, it’s Me by Michael P. Thomas
Rating: 5 out of 5 Kisses!

To my knowledge, this is the first story I’ve read by Michael P. Thomas and after reading this little gem of a story, it won’t be my last. I was immediately swept up into the lives of these two men and absolutely loved the story they had to tell. For a short story, I thought it was very well-developed and well-rounded. Although I do wish the story had been longer, but only because of my selfish reasons, not because the story wasn’t a complete one.

I loved the chemistry Shannon and Ben shared together. I highly enjoyed watching their relationship evolve from strangers to lovers. Both men are likeable and though they find themselves in interesting situations *Shannon has some unique Christmas experiences* I really found myself rooting for them to be together. It’s Not Yule, It’s Me is a warm and romantic story that will live in your heart long after you finish reading the story.

In His Line of Work by Tinnean
Rating: 2 out of 5 Kisses

This is going to sound a little strange, but I think I’m lost on this story. As I read and finished it, I felt like I had fallen somehow in the middle of another story and I was a little lost and confused. Deuce is an interesting character, but he is still a bit of a mystery. As is most of the story to me. *Scratches my head*

There seems to be a lot going on and a past I’m not sure about, so it makes me wonder if this book was part of a series or what. Because it felt incomplete to me and I felt like I fell into a rabbit hole, it was a hard for me to follow. I imagine fans of this author’s work will know exactly what is going on and will truly enjoy the story.

And This is Ed by JD Walker
Rating: 5 out of 5

I’ve read a couple of books by JD Walker, but after reading this short story, I’ll be actively looking for more by this author. I really liked our main hero Ed. Ed is a well-written three dimensional character that I think a lot of people will be able to relate with. He manages the cleaning crew and it’s because of this, Ed is often overlooked, poked fun at and treated like he doesn’t matter. He’s been hurt in the past and to keep others from hurting him again, Ed has built a wall around his heart. When he meets Titus, a new manager that Ed must work with, Ed is immediately attracted to the soft-spoken and seemingly sweet and thoughtful man.

I don’t want to give anything away but I was surprised by what happened. I felt anger and hurt for Ed. BUT saying this, I was very happy that underneath his sometimes gruff exterior, Ed knows how to forgive and love and allows himself to take chances. I liked the way his relationship continues to grow with Titus and have big hopes for them in the future.

As you can see almost all of these stories were very well-written and enjoyable reads. 2016 Top Ten Gay Romance is an easy book to recommend if you are looking for some romantic reads on a cold, rainy day.

Highly Recommended!

Sentimental Sunday: Power Play by JM Snyder

Power Play by JM Snyder

Several years ago, I’m not sure how many, I belonged to romance (M/F) book group and someone mentioned M/M books. Around this time I was starting to get tired with the books I was finding and decided to give the M/M genre a try. I was not sure where to look, at the time I don’t believe there were a lot of publishers online, and all I had was a small palm pilot. I found a few books that sounded interesting, there were some shifters, and cowboys, but the book that became one of my all-time favorites, one that I go back to time and again is JM Snyder’s Power Play.

I love this book and from the first page I was hooked. The story is about two young men and the only thing they have in common is the fact that they’re both athletes. Ryan Talonovich plays hockey on his college team. He is so good that they chant his name whenever he hits the ice. He has dreams of making the big time and knows nothing can stand in his way. During a practice game with members of his team Ryan is seriously injured and finds himself in a wheelchair. While the doctors try to tell him he MAY walk again someday, his days on the ice are over. That’s all Ryan hears and he is divested by the news. Ryan does not always come across in a good light. He’s nasty to his mother and he’s an ass to his physical therapist and former teammates. But this is a nineteen year old kid who has just gone through a scary accident. He’s afraid and not sure how to handle the road he now finds himself traveling. Ms. Snyder brings all of this across in a very realistic way and as I read I could not able but feel sorry for Ryan. It became easy to understand his actions even as I wanted to tell him to cut his parents some slack.

Dante Espinosa is a speed skater trying to make it to the Olympics. He’s only eighteen but he knows what he wants and he plans on making it, but he comes from the wrong side of the tracks and that means he has to work harder than anyone else. Not just to improve his times, but also to make sure he has enough money to pay his skating fees as well as pay his bills. During an event he is drawn to a young man sitting in the stands, so much so he almost loses his chance to advance to the finals. When he is done with his race he can’t keep himself from finding out whom the guy is the stand is. There is a toughness to Dante that I love, yet at the same time there is an innocence about him as well. I think most of that is due to the fact that he has spent most of his life focusing on skating. The one time he ventured away from that, led to heartache.

From the time Dante and Ryan meet there is an instant connection. The two know they are meant for each other, but it is more than that. Dante brings out the best in Ryan, and shows him he has something to fight for. While Ryan shows Dante what it is like to have someone in his corner, whether it is in the stands during a race or making sure Dante’s boss knows what no means. I loved the way these two bonded, as well as watching Ryan and Dante grow as individuals and as a couple. The story does have a few tough moments as both guys face issues with those close to them. That does not keep them from going after what they want. No matter how many times I have read this book I still find myself getting anxious at times and can’t help rooting for the men as they fight for their happily ever after. The one problem with this story however that is screams for a sequel, and believe me I am one of many fans who have contacted the author with hopes that one would be in the wings soon.

From the moment I starting reading Power Play I became a fan of not only the author’s but the genre as well. I have since read hundreds of books covering many sub-genres and have added many authors to my must buy/read file. Thank goodness for eBooks as I am sure I would have run out of storage room in the house a long time ago.

Sentimental Sunday Post by Lydia

Blurb for Power Play:

Ryan Talonovich is the star of his college hockey team, until an accident during practice leaves him confined to a wheelchair. The doctors say he’ll walk again but a new season is already underway and he’s been replaced on the team, which leaves him feeling alone and betrayed. What’s the use of fighting to get back on the ice now?

Then he meets Dante Espinosa, a short track skater on the city’s speed skating club. Though he has to work overtime to afford his sport, Dante is hell on ice, and dreams of making the cut on the U.S. Olympic Speedskating Team.

Their love of the ice brings them together, but too many obstacles stand in their way: Ryan’s struggle with therapy. The memory of Dante’s first boyfriend. Lack of funding to the event, Dante’s harassing boss, a skating friend in love with him, and Wil Dietrich, who will do anything to win.

Review:

One of the great things about JM Snyder’s books is the way she connects with her characters. Recipe for Romance has everything I enjoy when it comes to reading romance within this genre. The relationship between the two men is very sweet and I loved the way both men really connected with Preston’s daughter, Abby.

I really enjoyed watching these characters work at putting each other into their lives. Life isn’t always easy and I highly enjoyed watching this couple really work at starting something special between them. The chemistry between the two men is strong and really resonated with me as a reader. They really work at slowly making their relationship into something that could possibly be everlasting and to stand the test of time. Both men are realistically written with real life experiences and it was very interesting to see how things would work out between them.

Recipe for Romance
is the perfect read on a hot summer’s day. Fans of Ms. Snyder’s will love the sweet romance and love these characters have for one another and will adore the journey they go through to find a happy ending together.

POV: 3rd
Sub-Genre: Contemporary Romance
Kisses: 5

When hair stylist Jai Hathaway decided to open his own salon, he knew he would sacrifice some of his personal time to run the business. But long hours working late have him feeling lonely, and he just doesn’t seem to connect with the few men he dates. His business partner Kiki suggests what he needs is to find a different type of guy, someone who isn’t in the salon business, but not only does Jai not know how to find a guy like that, he isn’t even sure where to look.

On a particularly cold morning in January, the salon’s hot water goes out and Jai scrambles to find a plumber on short notice. Enter Duane Schneider, sexy and confident, and interested in getting more than just Jai’s hot water boiling. But he’s so outside Jai’s comfort zone that, at first, the stylist isn’t sure how to react. When it becomes obvious Duane wants to continue things outside of business hours, though, Jai agrees to a date, if only to see where the evening might lead.

Is Kiki right when she said Jai needed to find someone different? Or will Duane turn out to be just his style after all?

Review:

I’ve read many books by some wonderful authors, but I will shamelessly admit that JM Snyder is one of my favorites. I really like how this author is able to get to the heart of her characters and write a thought-provoking story every single time. Time and time again, her stories never disappoint and usually end up as a comfort read for me.

One of the things I loved about this story is the characters. All of them were very well-written and I found myself really becoming invested in their story. At first glance, Jai and Duane are pretty different, but as they got to know one another and as their attraction begins to grow into something stronger, I found that they had more in common than what they believed. Also, I loved the banter between them, as well as, the intense chemistry they had for one another.

Even the relationship between Jai and his best friend Kiki was a riot! They know each other so well, that it was funny to see how they played off of one another. I also liked how Jai and Kiki looked out for one another, just as best friends do, and now with Jai and Duane being together, it was good to see them all get along very well.

Just My Style
is a perfect choice for those who are looking for a quick, sexy, fun and lighthearted read on a rainy day. It’s a smart and sexy romance that will leave you with a smile on your face even though you crave for more of it! It is a very easy book to recommend, and I hope Ms. Snyder will write more about these characters in the future!

It isn’t that state trooper Mitch Adams doesn’t trust his boyfriend Daryl Danson. They’ve been in an exclusive relationship for eight years, the last five of which they’ve lived together. He knows Daryl isn’t interested in other guys, and he knows Daryl loves him.

But Mitch doesn’t like the fact that Daryl, a physical therapist turned professional masseuse, spends his working hours touching other people’s bodies. It’s hard to understand that the loving massages he receives in the bedroom aren’t the norm, especially since he’s never had a professional massage.

Mitch decides to do a little investigative work and discover for himself what exactly happens in the massage parlor. But when Daryl finds out about the appointment, he decides to give his lover a rub-down Mitch won’t soon forget.

Review:

Whew! JM Snyder definitely knows how to steam up a computer screen!! The great thing about this author is: not only does she write characters that live and breathe off of the written page, they also have an intense chemistry between them that will not be denied.

For such a short, erotic read, it is definitely a very satisfying one. I really liked the backstory of how Mitch and Daryl met and loved the strength of their love and passion for each other. I understood why Mitch had some reservations about Daryl’s job, and I absolutely adored how Daryl quickly shows Mitch that he has NOTHING to worry about.

If you are looking for a quick, sexy read with likeable characters, Rub Me the Right Way is definitely for you! Also, I have to mention that if you haven’t read Henry and Jim (get your hankies ready, but it is a stunning story) and Persistence of Memory (also a hanky read but with a beautiful ending) by this author, I encourage you to look these two books up too. All three books show this author’s talent at writing very different stories, setting and heroes. Ms. Snyder knows her characters and it’s obvious she loves them as much as I usually end up loving them too. I highly recommend this book and hope you check out the other two (as well as her other reads) as well.
