The last thing Emery expected at the end of his senior year of high school was to become a vampire and fall in love with his best friend… Emery Mavus just wants to survive his senior year of high school. Becoming a vampire complicates things. So does a bizarre mentor, a group of vampire hunters, and an unexpected, new attraction for his openly gay best friend, Connor. An occasional uncontrollable hunger for blood might be the least of his worries.

Review:

Life As A Teenage Vampire is a coming of age story with a twist. Along with worrying about prom, graduating, getting into college, and falling in love with his best friend Emery also must figure out how to live as a vampire. Emery had no knowledge of vampires or hunters until being changed by Mr. Leonard, his employer. With his employer dead, Emery, with the help of his best friend, Connor must figure out just how much becoming a vampire has changed his life. Thankfully, Alec, the maker of Emery’s former employer, comes along to give the boys a hand. But so, does Wendy, a hunter that Alec, Emery and Connor must decide if they can trust.

I really liked this book. The story follows two young men learning to live with the sudden changes in their lives while trying to handle the usual teenage issues. The fact that they are dealing with vampires and hunters brings the two even closer together. Soon Emery starts to feel for Connor, the love that Connor has always had for him. But Connor is afraid to tell Emery how he feels and doesn’t realize the Emery is falling in love with him. I loved the way their friends kept trying to encourage Connor. Some of their comments made me laugh, especially Michael’s and Aurora’s.

Their friends are not the only ones that add a light touch to this story. Alec is Emery’s new mentor. He was Mr. and Mrs. Leonard’s maker, and has shown up to see who killed the Leonard’s and why. He’s surprised to see that not only was Emery turned but that Connor knows about it and has already feed Emery. Alec, along with Connor, adds a snarky factor to this story and some of the things they say will have you laughing. The story isn’t all laughs though, as there is still a couple of murders to solve and hunters to find before they can kill Emery. While Emery and Connor only suspect that there are hunters, Alec confirms this and sets about teaching the boys want they need to know. This comes in handy when Wendy comes into the story.
There is a lot going on in Life As A Teenage Vampire, and I do not want to give too much away. Let’s just say that there are several little twists and turns in this book that will surprise that readers. I loved the way the author has Emery handle certain aspects in this book. I also love the way the story is wrapped up, and can see this as the first book of a series.

Ms. Meuwissen is a new author for me, and I am glad that I gave Life As A Teenage Vampire a chance. I will be keeping my eyes open for more from this author and encourage others to check out her books as well.
