Jamie Ryan was almost ready to accept he’d never find his destined mate. They’re uncommon to begin with, and same-sex versions are downright rare. Since his gay best friend found a destined mate, Jamie figured he was out of luck. Until end-of-semester stress forces him to go through the full-moon shift early. Stuck in wolf form, he runs into none other than his destined mate. Who’s human.

Chad Sutton has always had good instincts. They served him well as a detective and continued on when he went private. Those instincts tell him there’s something about the dog that comes up to him while running away from animal control that isn’t quite right. He works to put the pieces together, but is unsuccessful until his dog turns into a human before his eyes.

Jamie has no idea what the mate bite of a shifter will do to a human. He’s terrified to try—and possibly kill his mate. They hunt for answers while working together on one of Chad’s cases. It’s easy to see they belong together, but Jamie fears the gods gave him someone he can’t keep.

Patience is the second book in the Forbes Mates series. It is important to read the books in order as Devotion introduces Jamie, who is now a main character, as well as some of the secondary characters that pop up in Patience. While this shifter story follows many of the norms that we see in other paranormal books, Patience is still a great read, and one I could not put down.

Jamie is a shifter. While he thought he found a mate in Finley, he understood why it was not meant to be. Now he thinks he will never find the true mate and wonders if he should just give up. Of course, fans of this sub-genre know that this is when Jamie ends up meeting his mate. The way the author brings them together will have you laughing. In fact there are many times in this book when you will have to laugh, just saying.

Chad use to be a cop, but after being outed while on the job he’s gone private. Chad is also human, which throws Jamie for a loop. Jamie also has a major problem that he can’t overcome, which means it is sometime before he and Chad can meet face to face. Although watching the relationship between Chad and Jamie is entertaining, it is not the only focus of Patience.

The author has woven a mystery, actually two, throughout the story. One has to do with the case Chad is working on, but the other has to do with the shifter world and the secrets some packs are keeping. I found this part of the story interesting and can’t wait to see how this will play out.

Fans of the first book are sure to love Patience. The characters and story line pull you in from the beginning. The author also uses this book to set up the third story which I hope will be out soon. If you have not yet tried anything by this author I would suggest you try the Forbes Mates series, just make sure you get both books.
