The universe is a glitterball I hold in the palm of my hand.
Once the golden boy of the English literary scene, now a clinically depressed writer of pulp crime fiction, Ash Winters has given up on love, hope, happiness, and—most of all—himself. He lives his life between the cycles of his illness, haunted by the ghosts of other people’s expectations.
Then a chance encounter at a stag party throws him into the arms of Essex boy Darian Taylor, an aspiring model who lives in a world of hair gel, fake tans, and fashion shows. By his own admission, Darian isn’t the crispest lettuce in the fridge, but he cooks a mean cottage pie and makes Ash laugh, reminding him of what it’s like to step beyond the boundaries of anxiety.
But Ash has been living in his own shadow for so long that he can’t see past the glitter to the light. Can a man who doesn’t trust himself ever trust in happiness? And how can a man who doesn’t believe in happiness ever fight for his own?
Glitterland by Alexis Hall is a beautifully written romance that will leave you highly satisfied and longing for more. As I read this book, I was immediately gripped within the fresh and fast-paced story-line with realistically written characters that live and breathe off of the pages of this amazing book.
I admit to becoming quickly captivated by both heroes. Although the story is told through Ash’s point of view, Ash, himself is such a great narrator I felt like I knew Darian as well.
Both characters are very different people. Ash comes from an educated background. Although he’s achieved much success as a writer and has a few good friends, Ash is very much of a loner. He lives with bi-polar disorder and each and every day is a struggle to cope and even survive.
When he meets, Darian, Ash isn’t looking for anything more than a hook-up. But, Darian’s zest for life, sweet disposition and determination to plant himself firmly into Ash’s life. It’s because of Darian that Ash begins to live again and it’s because of Darian that Ash once more believes in hope. Hope for the future, hope for love and hope for happiness.
I truly loved this book. Though Ash can be quite surly at times, I found him to be a very likeable, and sympathetic character. There were times that Ash makes some foolish choices, but I truly enjoyed watching him learn from his mistakes and in the end, strive to be a worthy person of Darian’s love.
If you are looking for a well-written story that will live in your heart long after you finish reading the book, then Glitterland is the novel for you.
