Title: First Omega
Publisher: JMS Books
Author: Rebecca James
Nothing can prepare Josiah Kimbrel for what he finds when he enters the compound of the River Wolf Pack. As an ambassador of the human-werewolf congress, Josiah is keen to build bridges between the two species. Josiah is surprised to see how ‘normal’ things look in the compound; the wolves, all of whom are gay, live in family units, complete with children, in houses built from local materials.
Then there’s River, the pack alpha. Josiah can’t deny his attraction to the handsome, dominant wolf man. Josiah’s world is further turned upside down when he unexpectedly goes into heat. He doesn’t understand — how can he be half-werewolf and an omega? River wants Josiah for his mate, but is Josiah prepared to leave everything he knows in the city and become first omega of a werewolf pack?
First Omega is a very interesting paranormal story by author Rebecca James. While there are some similarities to other paranormal stories, the world created by Ms. James is slightly different than what we see in a majority of the shifter stories. In First Omega the werewolves are all gay, with some able to bare children, allowing for the procreation of the species. Also in this book humans know about werewolves, yet the relationship between them is not always an easy one. Also while some stories may have two omegas in a pack it is unusually. In First Omega the River Wolf Pack has multiple omegas, and readers can imagine what kind of trouble this will cause. All of these aspects play important roles in First Omega helping to make this a great read.
The characters in this story are just as well developed as the world in which the book takes place. Josiah is a human spending a month with the River Wolf Pack in order to observe them with hopes of improving the relationship between werewolves and human. His knowledge is basic but more than what most know. He’s surprised however by what he sees when he arrives at the pack. He is also confused when he is drawn to a couple of the wolves, although it is the Alpha that really draws his attention.
River is the pack Alpha and he holds his pack together with strength and power. That does not mean that everyone is happy with his choices, especially when he agrees to allow a human to spent time with them. Of course right from the start River senses that there is more to Josiah than what even the young man knows.
There is a lot going on in First Omega. Between Josiah learning the truth about his parents, to mating River, as well as the various twists and turns the Congress throws at the pack there is plenty of reasons for the reader to turn the pages. I could not put this book down and while there is nothing mentioned about this being a series, it is easy to see this as a first story in one. While I have never read anything by Ms. James, I will be looking for more stories from her.
