Can a lonely, aging farmer and a loveless artist whose creativity has gone missing find happiness on the prairies?
Life would be perfect for fifty-two-year-old farmer Finn Garrity if he just had someone to snuggle with by the fireplace. But single gay men aren’t exactly thick on the ground in Eagle Tree, Alberta.
Successful artist Philip Connaway wonders if his creative dry spell has anything to do with his dried-up love life. When Philip takes his nephew into farm country in search of a snowy owl to photograph, he meets Finn, who offers assistance. Together, they find the elusive bird—and much more.
Despite the attraction between them, differences, misunderstandings, and self-doubt threaten to end Finn and Philip’s romance. For a future together, Finn must take a risk, and Philip must find a way to bring love to Finn’s fallow heart.

His Fallow Heart by Ava Hayden is the first book I’ve read by this author and it won’t be my last. I really enjoyed the easy style of writing she has and she had a real knack at getting to the heart and soul of her characters.
Both heroes were people I’d like to be friends with myself in my real everyday life. They are mature, likeable men who are truly in the prime of their lives. I liked how they was self-assured and confident within their own skin and loved how they really connected with one another on an emotional level. Also, they seemed to actually like and respect one another, so it was easy to get captivated with the story they had to tell.
Although this is a short story, it is well-told and the pacing of it made me feel like read as a complete book. I didn’t feel like the ending was abrupt and enjoyed watching their relationship evolve into something special.
His Fallow Heart is a fantastically told story that is a perfect read for those who crave a quick read with strong, well-written characters who live and breathe off of the written page. I loved this book and look forward to reading more books by Ava Hayden in the future.
