Thomas Derrik is about to have the worst Christmas of his life. Three days before the holiday, he finds out the father he doesn’t get along with is arriving on Christmas Eve, his ex-lover and new brother-in-law will be staying at his estate until the New Year, and his beloved brother, Edmund, has died.
Luckily, Edmund’s last holiday scheme may well save Thomas’s Christmas: Henry Appleby, a young lord fresh from the Continent, has arranged to court Thomas. But the family tragedy and jealous exes may put an end to the romance before it begins.
There aren’t many historical M/M holiday romances available, so when I had the chance to read and review A Gentleman’s Agreement by J. Roman, I immediately jumped at the chance. There is definitely something special about historical romances that satisfy my romantic heart, and in A Gentleman’s Agreement, I was immediately swept up into the heroes lives and thoroughly captivated with the romantic storyline until I finished the last word.
Thomas is convinced he’s having the holiday season from hell. Between his very difficult and demanding father coming to his estate on Christmas Eve, and finding out the devastating news that his brother has died, Thomas is just about at his wits end. To top things off, Thomas’ sister and his brother-in-law (who is also his first love) are now staying with him until after the holiday season. So, just when he thinks things can’t get any worse, he has the unexpected company of his brother’s friend, Henry and Henry’s sister, Marietta.
As soon as he meets Henry, Thomas is fascinated with him. But, Thomas has been hurt in the past, and since his homosexuality is not accepted and even dangerous during these times, Thomas believes his attraction to Henry will be an unrequited one. To his surprise, not only does Henry return his affections, but has every intention of courting Thomas. When Thomas finds out that there is a life-changing scheme in the mix of things, he begins to see that the holiday season he thought would be the worst, may just be the best Christmas he’s ever had.
I really loved this novella. I enjoyed watching Thomas open his guarded heart to Henry. I liked that both heroes were strong, intelligent men who had an immediate connection together. They really seemed to bring out the best in each other, and I enjoyed watching them fall in love. Another thing I really liked about this book was the different twists and turns the story had throughout the novel. I liked that the author kept me guessing at what was going to happen next and how these two men were really going to be able to have a life together.
A Gentleman’s Agreement is a romantic and well-written historical holiday romance. This is the first book I’ve read by J. Roman and it definitely won’t be my last. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author and hope Ms. Roman writes more historical M/M romances in the future! Highly Recommended!
