Scottish photographer Aidan MacLeod has always regarded legendary French photographer Jean-Luc Montpluessy as his “mental mentor,” even if the reclusive artist hasn’t been seen in public since 1941. But when Aidan gets the chance to meet the man, Jean-Luc tells him he needs to go back—and presses a ring into Aidan’s hand. Can Aidan remember the life he’s forgotten?
Photographer Aidan MacLeod has been looking forward to attending the seminar of his mentor Jean-Luc Montpluessy. Jean-Luc has been out of the limelight for decades and is known to live quite a reclusive lifestyle, so when he has the opportunity to hopefully meet his idol in person, Aidan doesn’t think twice about giving every dime he has to see Jean-Luc and hopefully meet the man. But as soon as Jean-Luc sees him, Aidan is immediately thrown out of the seminar, and told he is presence is disturbing the reclusive man and that he will receive a full refund. Confused and a little hurt, Aidan is still determined to meet Jean-Luc, so he hunts down Jean-Luc’s ride and waits for him. As soon as Jean-Luc is about to leave, the elderly man spots him and looks devastated. Just when Aidan’s about to once again be escorted away, Jean-Luc walks up to him and gives him a ring. He tells Aidan that seeing him causes him too much pain, and he must find a way to go back to him. Aidan is understandably confused by Jean-Luc’s words, but before he can question the mysterious man, Jean-Luc leaves, and Aidan becomes determined to get to the bottom of Jean-Luc’s parting words. After a series of flash backs, Aiden instinctively knows he must unravel the mystery behind the ring and Jean-Luc’s past, if not he realizes both men are doomed to have an unhappy future.
I’m a fan of Ms. Garcia’s writing. Some of her characters are my favorites, so I really looked forward to reading this short story by her. Although I really enjoyed the story and the characters within it, I do wish the book had been longer. I loved the whirlwind of intrigue and mystery behind Jean-Luc and Aidan’s relationship and was immediately swept up into the characters’ lives. But at times, I did think the story was a little confusing and I did have an unanswered question or two at the end of it. In ways, the book reminded me a little of the movie, Somewhere in Time, which is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I believe this is one of the reasons why I did like this book.
I did love Aidan’s determination to solve the mystery and return to his lover. I also loved the sweet, romantic love that both Jean-Luc and Aidan had for each other…I just wish there had been more of it. Ms. Garcia’s imagination is amazing and her characters are truly wonderful, but I couldn’t help but want more backstory and more of Jean-Luc and Aidan together in the end. I’m looking forward to reading more books by Ms. Garcia in the future.
