When the bizarre murder of an old classmate reunites ex-lovers Ethan and Jesse, a shared childhood secret draws them back together as an otherworldly killer tries to tear them apart for good.

After escaping its mysterious grasp twelve years ago, Ethan Wilde never thought he’d return to Kingston, North Carolina—until the murder of an old schoolmate draws him back to the hometown he fears and the love he left behind. Rooted to Kingston by a force he can’t explain, Jesse couldn’t leave with Ethan when he asked, and it’s a choice he’s always regretted. A choice based on a terrible secret they share with four others. When they were nine years old, the six of them were taken into the woods, and no one is exactly sure what happened to them. Only that they came out changed. Marked. Twenty years later, the evil that hunted them is back and it’s collected two souls already. Ethan and Jesse’s love defeated the monster once, but are old feelings strong enough to save the survivors a second time?

This is the first book I’ve read written by A.M. Arthur, and it definitely won’t be my last! I knew from reading the blurb, that Prodigal was going to have both romance and mystery, but I had no idea what a nail-biting horror story this book would turn out to be! From the very first sentence to the last word, Prodigal kept me enthralled within its grasp. I immediately was gripped by the fast-paced storyline and the intensity of feelings the two main heroes felt for one another. I loved every twist and turn the book takes throughout the storyline and truly hated to see it come to an end.

The story begins with Ethan receiving a mysterious email stating one of his childhood friends has passed away. Although, Ethan has been running from his past, he feels drawn to return to his childhood home, even though he instinctively knows he’s putting himself back into the line of danger. As soon as he returns, memories he’s tried to forget come to surface and he’s quickly reintroduced to his boyhood best friend, Jesse. Soon, he and Jesse have rekindled their friendship and find solace in each other’s arms. But with danger breathing down their necks and threatening the new emotional bond they are beginning to form again, together he and Jesse must work through their deepest fears if they want to survive the curse that’s followed them since their childhood, so they might have a chance of being together again.

I really loved this book! A.M. Arthur has a very descriptive, addictive way to telling a story. My only gripe is the book was shorter than I would have liked, and that’s because I enjoyed the characters and the intensity of the storyline. I admit I did have a few unanswered questions at the end of the book, but I hope that the author will write more about these characters and answer them for me. If you’re looking for a great horror/romance themed book, Prodigal is definitely the book for you! Highly Recommended!
