Title: Sucks & Blows
Author: Storm Grant
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
Characters: Cary Drewel and Pierce Sharpe
POV: 3rd Person
Deeply in debt to a loan shark, oversexed dentist Cary Drewel lives in fear of foreclosure and bodily harm. His new practice is missing one rather crucial element: patients. Which, terrifyingly enough, is the one thing his creditors also don’t have.
Pierce Sharpe, a powerful vampire with a drinking problem—or, more accurately, a problem drinking—can’t feed through the pain in his damaged eye teeth. In danger of losing his standing in the vampire community, Pierce seeks Cary’s dental services. When Cary extracts his canines, Pierce must turn to other bodily fluids for sustenance.
Together, Cary and Pierce find a mutually pleasurable solution to both their problems. Turns out, though, there’s more to this dentist-patient relationship than simple suction, and what began with raw hunger from each of them might just end in love.
October is the month of Halloween, and as book lovers know, when publishing companies are loading the shelves with vampires, werewolves, and other creatures of the night. New publishing company Riptide is no different. Storm Grant’s Sucks and Blows is one of the Ripples (read short stories) that the company is putting out their opening month and it had me laughing from the very first page.
Cary Drewel is a dentist who is so far in debt to a loan shark that he knows the man is going to break his kneecaps the next time they meet. His first day of busy is coming to an end and with no patients insight he’s more than a little worried. But then Pierce Sharpe walks in the door and things start looking up. The author packs a lot into this short story and left me wanting more. The characters are great. I could not make up my mind about whether or not I wanted a dentist like Cary. His puns had me cracking up and the way he prepared himself before pulling Pierce’s teeth was over the top. Pierce is the total opposite of Cary. Where Cary is a bit of an oddball, Pierce is the strong, commanding vampire personality we all like to see, only this time the tough guy has a tooth problem that leaves him in pain and lisping. The idea of a vampire in need of a dentist is great and when Pierce’s tooth problem is dealt with it’s time for the two to get together and the author does an excellent job heating the pages up.
Sucks and Blows was a wonderful short story and I hope the author has plans for a longer follow up as this would make a great series.
