Review:
The Trick Is is an absolutely stunning short story—beautifully written, complex characters in a conflicted relationship that is reinforced by a sense of despair for their situation; the sense of tragedy absolutely permeates this brief but beautiful story.
Lawrence of Arabia and Sherif Ali, former lovers whose romance ended when T.E. Lawrence returned to England, meet again when Ali shows up at Lawrence’s office in Whitehall. The incredible sense of loss and regret, the sense of desperation and heartache are a near palpable force that transports the reader through this incredibly melancholy romance.
There is some good evidence to the fact that T.E. Lawrence was a masochist. Some might believe that to love this story would show a bit of a masochistic streak too. Perhaps so, but I must confess I enjoyed the heartache immensely.
The Trick Is has been offered as a free read on Aleksandr Voinov’s website. I can’t recommend this story highly enough to fans of dramatic conflict and to those who don’t mind a bit of anguish in their reading.
