BLURB:
“From within perfect darkness I have learned to shine.”

Heartbreak can leave even the strongest of men scarred. Like Icarus, I too flew too high and fell. That downward journey tore the fibre of my being and shredded my soul. The gauntlet of love should never be underestimated.

However, I had to get up again and rise like a phoenix from its proverbial ashes. And like a phoenix, I took to flight!

This is a poetic account of the journey I had to go through and a tribute to becoming a better man regardless.

Other Lands by Steve Nugent

Title: Other Lands
Author: Steve Nugent
Publisher: JMS Books LLC
Pages: 29
Characters: Jack Mitchell
POV: 3rd person
Setting: Contemporary
Sub-Genre: Drama
Cover Rating: 3
Kisses: 3

Blurb:

Jack Mitchell is troubled by dark memories of his past, unable to accept his own sexuality. Skeptical of help offered through religion and psychology, he rejects the love of his partner, Peter, and scorns any attempts to alter his situation.

Then he returns to the country where he grew up, the source of his haunting troubles, where an unexpected encounter points him toward a resolution.

This story appears in the author’s collection, Attractions.

Review:

Much like Sam, the protagonist in Steve Nugent’s Syncopation, Jack Mitchell is a troubled, emotionally unavailable man suffering from some unresolved issues with his father.

An absentee mother, the elder Mr. Martin’s battle with alcoholism, being uprooted from his home, all leave Jack with quite a few psychological scars, problems that have tarnished his relationship with his lover and left him unable to trust in either faith or science to help him turn his life around.

An encounter with a mysterious stranger, a man in whom Jack is inexplicably compelled to confide, seems to be the catharsis he needs to find resolution, but it might be a case of too little too late for Jack, as a shocking twist at the end leaves the reader entirely at loose ends.

And much like the conflict I had with Syncopation, I found it incredibly difficult to form a connection with the distant and hollow Jack Martin. The reader isn’t given the opportunity to experience any sort of redemption for the character, which leaves one in the problematic position of not being invested in the outcome of Jack’s story.

Syncopation by Steve Nugent

Title: Syncopation
Author: Steve Nugent
Publisher: JMS Books LLC
Pages: 35
Characters: Sam, Richard
POV: 3rd person (1st person journal entries)
Setting: Toronto
Sub-Genre: Contemporary
Cover Rating: 3
Kisses: 3.5

Blurb:

Sam believes that his life is out of control. In his relationship with John, he feels powerless and impotent. Intolerant of his psychologist’s help, he abruptly breaks with John and embarks on a distrustful and defensive liaison with Richard, a man he meets at a music recital. Each man sees himself in the other, creating a dynamic that prevents them from getting too intimate. Can they risk their budding relationship and finally allow themselves to love?

This story appears in the author’s collection, Attractions.

Review:

Syncopation is an interesting short story, a character study of a very flawed man named Sam, who functions behind a mask of false confidence and sophistication, a man who never shows who he truly is, a man who needs to be in complete control of everything and everyone he encounters.

Sam’s functional dysfunction allows him to interact in the world but not to participate in anything that might become involvement or emotional connection, stemming from a childhood that could only be considered as psychologically unhealthy. The end of a two year relationship from which he was emotionally disconnected has opened the way for a new object of interest—Richard Jones—a man who is wearing some masks of his own and is prepared to beat Sam at his own game.

Sam was a difficult character to relate to; his sense of detachment was well portrayed by the author, yet there was also cause for compassion toward him, as he tells a bit of his own story in journal entries at the recommendation of his psychiatrist.

As he and Richard begin to grow closer, there’s reason to believe that Sam may be coming to a turning point in his behaviors and attitudes, though the story ends before I was able to fully trust in the sincerity of his transformation. Sam would have to work much harder to convince me he’d truly changed. But perhaps that was the point. The sense of emotional disconnect works between the reader and Sam too.

Eating Ice Cream on the Subway by Steve Nugent

Title: Eating Ice Cream on the Subway
Author: Steve Nugent
Publisher: JMS Books LLC
Pages: 7
Characters: Strangers on a subway train
POV: 3rd person
Setting: Toronto Subway
Sub-Genre: Contemporary Drama
Cover Rating: 3

“To sin by silence, when we should protest, makes cowards out of men.” Most people know what they’d like to do when confronted with violence, but what really happens when they come face to face with the worst society has to offer? In this short, powerful story, when a man witnesses a hateful, homophobic bashing on the subway, his response might hit a little too close to home for some of us.

Review:

Eating Ice Cream on the Subway may be the most powerful six-hundred and five word story you’ll ever read. It’s the story of strangers on a Toronto subway train, people from various walks of life whose lives will likely never intersect again, other than in this random and unintentional way.

This is the story of a man whose deliberate inaction during the commission of a hate crime might very well make him every bit as guilty of the crime as if he’d committed it himself. It’s his silence, his ability to look away when a gay couple is threatened and violently attacked by a thug on the train that becomes an accusation and commentary on our society in general, and on our insular attitude when it comes to getting involved and taking an interest in our fellow man.

Explosive, shocking, and undeniably sorrowful, take a moment and read this FREE story; it will touch you profoundly.
