Blurb:

Caine Neiheisel is stuck in a dead-end job at the end of a dead-end relationship when the chance of a lifetime falls in his lap. His mother inherits her uncle’s sheep station in New South Wales, Australia, and Caine sees it as the opportunity to start over, out on the range where his stutter won’t hold him back and his willingness to work will surely make up for his lack of knowledge.

Unfortunately, Macklin Armstrong, the foreman of Lang Downs who should be Caine’s biggest ally, alternates between being cool and downright dismissive, and the other hands are more amused by Caine’s American accent than they are moved by his plight… until they find out he’s gay and their amusement turns to scorn. It will take all of Caine’s determination—and an act of cruel sabotage by a hostile neighbor—to bring the men of Lang Downs together and give Caine and Macklin a chance at love.

Review:

When Caine Neiheisel’s mother inherits a sheep ranch from her uncle in Australia, Caine instinctively knows this is his chance to have a new start in life. Caine is in his early thirties and has a dead end desk job. He’s has many promotions denied him because of his nervous stuttering. Although he has a handle of it most of the time, whenever he becomes anxious or excited, he can’t control his stutter, causing him to lose many job opportunities for him. In the past, Caine has always fantasized about meeting his great uncle and spending the summer with him in Australia. Unfortunately for him, this never happened, but he realizes that running the ranch will give him that second chance he’s always dreamed of having.

As soon as he arrives in Australia, he meets the ranch’s foreman, Macklin Armstrong and he’s immediately intrigued and attracted to the rough around the edges cowboy. Although Macklin welcomes him and promises to help him learn the ins and outs of running a ranch, he’s often hot and cold with Caine, and this keeps Caine confused and on his toes while he’s around him. As time goes by, Macklin starts to admire Caine’s determination to work hard and to make the ranch successful and profitable for everyone. As their attraction and respect for one another intensifies, both men have some difficult choices to make if they want to take a chance at making the love they feel for each other last.

I really loved this book! I’ve read several stories by Ms. Tachna and I’ve never been disappointed with any of them. Her characters really live and breathes off of the written pages, and she has a knack of drawing this reader into their often complex and sometimes complicated lives. I also appreciate how she’s able to make wherever her books are set at, almost alive, like it is also a character within itself. I literally could see the ranch, feel the intense heat or bitter cold and visualize the beauty of Australia.

Both Caine and Macklin are very interesting characters. They both are stubborn men who are willing to fight for what they believe in. I thought they were very well matched and ended up bringing out the best in each other. I applauded how much both characters grew and developed as the story continued and ended up respecting and liking them both in the end. I really enjoyed reading this book and I hated to see it come to an end. I’m looking forward to reading more books by Ms. Tachna and Inherit the Sky has a permanent spot on my keeper shelf.

When Derek surprises his partner Bram with an authentic kilt in his family’s tartan pattern as an anniversary present, the results are even better than he expected. Bram looks fantastic in the full dress outfit, and the special dinner Derek has planned becomes only the prelude to an incredible evening with his Highland lover.

Review:

A very sweet short about two men, Derek and his lover Bram and their night on the town. Derek surprises Bram with a kilt made and shipped from Scotland in his family’s colors and pattern. Derek has gone all out and made reservations at a high class restaurant and even hired a car to take them and bring them home. What follows is a night of steamy sex.

If you have a few minutes, grab this short, and give it a read…you’ll love it.

The Inventor’s Companion by Ariel Tachna

Title: The Inventor’s Companion
Author: Ariel Tachna
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Pages: 350
Characters: Gabriel Blackstone, Lucio
POV: 3rd person
Setting: Alternate History
Genre: Steampunk/Romance
Cover Rating: 4
Kisses: 4.5

Blurb:

Gabriel Blackstone’s world is divided quite clearly into castes: everyone knows their place and abides by it. As an inventor in the merchant caste, his life is predictable in its routine until the night his best friends and assistants, Caleb and Andrew, purchase the time—and body—of a companion for his birthday. As an activist in the Caste Equality movement, everything Gabriel believes in tells him to refuse the gift, but then he meets Lucio. The beautiful and alluring companion is far more than the vapid courtesan he’d expected, and he can’t get the man out of his mind.

After that night, Gabriel tells himself to forget about Lucio, but a chance meeting at a ball makes it clear neither of them is willing to ignore the compelling chemistry between them. It will take all their combined trust and cunning, plus the help of a wily aristocrat and a plucky political activist, to overcome the challenges of infidelity, abuse, and social stigma that lay along their road; however, Gabriel knows it will all be worth it if at the end of the day he can call Lucio his own.

Review:

Although this is not the first of Ariel Tachna’s books we’ve featured here on our site, this is the first time I’ve had the personal pleasure of reading one of her offerings. Now I question what has taken me so long to climb onboard the bandwagon!

The Inventor’s Companion is an imaginative story told in an alternate history/steampunk universe where clockwork machines and steam driven engines rule. Gabriel Blackstone is our inventor—a member of the merchant caste in a society that caters to the Haves and dismisses the Have Nots, marking, labeling and classifying people based on the circumstances of their birth, prohibiting them from ever elevating their status in life. Those members of the lower castes are at best discounted by the aristocracy and at worst debased, treated as less than human—more like property to be used on a whim, without regard for things such as free will and respect.

Lucio is a companion, a member of the lowest of the lower castes. Companions are, in essence, slaves living lives of sexual servitude to anyone with enough coin (meaning the aristocracy, in general) to purchase their time and talents. In their roles, the companions are in complete submission to the wills and urges of the man or woman who purchases their services, indifferent to the concept of moral obligation and basic compassion. Companions are used and bred like dogs; their pedigree and worth to their handlers determining their value in procreation.

As it is with humankind, however, where there may not be freedom of choice, the status quo cannot hinder freedom of thought. And where there is freedom of thought, there is progress. Where there is progress, there is action, and this story is about just that—the thoughts and actions of a group who refuse to accept the unacceptable and who would fight to change it.

Gabriel and Lucio are brought together by chance and fall in love under the unlikeliest and most difficult of circumstances. Their story is one which communicates the belief that love can overcome all, for with that guiding motivation, the world can and will change for the better. Theirs is a romance that is quite touching and deeply sentimental. It is gentle and, though they do face their share of difficulties from outside sources and extenuating circumstances, the reader is never given reason to worry that the two men and the bond they share will not endure the trials they face.

As there were some plot threads that have been left untied, specifically with regards to Lucio and his best friend, Cressida—a situation which resulted in a significant event for Lucio, Gabriel, and for Cressida herself—as well as in the brewing changes of the social and political climate, I’m hoping it means we’ll be seeing a sequel to The Inventor’s Companion at some point in the future. It couldn’t come too soon for this steampunk fan.

Games Lovers Play: Amorous Liaisons by Ariel Tachna

Title: Amorous Liaisons (Games Lovers Play 3)
Author: Ariel Tachna
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Pages: 48
POV: 3rd
Kisses: 4.5

Blurb:

Micah and Cameron like a little spice in their relationship, and they both look forward to games night. Except that Micah’s gotten impatient and decides he can’t wait until their scheduled night to share his latest fantasy with his lover. Instead, he surprises “Lord” Cameron with a manservant who’s both unusually innocent and unusually responsive

Review:

Micah and Cameron are back, this time in a longer scene and they jump back in time to explore the English Lord and manservant. Micah decides on his own to begin the games early, ahead of their scheduled game night. He turns into an innocent manservant who will do anything for his lord and Master, Cameron. Master takes his innocent manservant and teaches him about sex, and let me just tell you, Ariel does an amazing job with setting this scene up. The characters are so believable, they are so in love, and the trust is outstanding.

As I’ve said before, Ariel, I sure hope you’re working on something with these two men because I miss them already.

Games Lovers Play: Best Behavior by Ariel Tachna

Title: Best Behavior (Games Lovers Play 2)
Author: Ariel Tachna
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Pages: 25
POV: 3rd
Kisses: 4.5

Blurb:

Micah and Cameron like a little spice in their relationship, and they both look forward to games night. But tonight they’re trying something new, a long-cherished school boy fantasy of Cameron’s, with his lover as the belt-wielding headmaster. *Wet Dream*

Review:

Another juicy short with Cameron and Micah and this time they are playing headmaster and student, a long time fantasy of Cameron’s. It’s a great opening scene here, with Cameron in the shower ridding himself of all his hair, well, almost all of it. He takes extra care with how he dresses and styles his hair, so he can look younger than he is. He appears before his lover as the character he is to play and the game begins.

Ariel writes a very fun and interesting D/s story and I’d love to see her take it further, more extensive with these two characters. I want to spend more time with them.

Games Lovers Play: Ride ‘Em Cowboy by Ariel Tachna

Micah and Cameron like a little spice in their relationship, and they both look forward to games night. Tonight Micah has plans to drive Cameron crazy, plans that include leather, a lasso, and Micah getting the ride of his life. *Wet Dream*

Review:

It is so hard to review a short story, and this one is short, it’s only thirteen pages but for the length, Ariel sure packs it in there. Micah and Cameron are live in lovers, and once a month they have game night, where one of the men plays the Dominate partner and boy do they have fun. In this particular short Micah uses chaps, minus the jeans, a rope, and orders that melted me. Since it will take you just a few minutes to read and fall in love with the two men, I say give it a go and don’t forget the other two shorts that Micah and Cameron star in.

Rediscovery by Ariel Tachna

Title: Rediscovery
Author: Ariel Tachna
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Pages: 64
Characters: Michael Donovan, Lee Mitchell
POV: 3rd person
Scene Setting: Houston
Sub Genre: Contemporary Romance
Book Cover Rating: 4
Kisses: 4.5

Blurb:

Visiting the dealers’ room at the Houston Gay Gamers convention, Michael Donovan’s attention is caught by a booth featuring leather wear and fetish gear. Though he’s never been drawn to that lifestyle, he can’t deny his attraction to the handsome man staffing the booth, especially when he sees Lee helping to entertain another vendor’s young children. Lee soon makes it clear the attraction is mutual, but can Michael move past his preconceptions about Lee’s wares and get to know the man himself?

Review:

Rediscovery by Ariel Tachna is an awesome story! A big part of it, for me, is due to Lee; I love that he’s a person that’s so ‘in the moment’; he’s not one to take for granted all that’s around him and that is a trait I admire most in people; well one of ‘em anyways. Probably because it’s something I wish I did more of.

When the story began, the focus is Michael, but I think Lee kind of took over; I got the impression that he surprised the author as well; he does have a larger-than-life personality. I like Michael, don’t get me wrong, but there’s something about Lee that appeals to me on such a grand scale. It’s that living large thing, something that I don’t do.

As well as his outgoing personality, Lee is a person who cares—really cares—for people; any people. And it’s this caring that was the first chink in Michael’s armor… he couldn’t reconcile Lee’s actions with what Michael saw as his lifestyle. Like so many of us, Michael made an assumption about Lee based on his first sight of him; I can certainly relate to Michael about that.

Ariel Tachna does a beautiful job with Michael and Lee’s story. I found myself glued to the pages and I really didn’t want to put it down—thank heavens for shorter books!  I think what I enjoyed the most about Rediscovery is that it’s about life. The allure exists in that realism, but it’s also very tied up in the romance and in the emotional growth of the characters. Yes, Michael is the one who changed the most, but he did have a strong effect on Lee… and that’s in addition to the attraction they both felt.

Rediscovery is a tender, sweet and sexy tale that has an underlying message that I can truly take to heart. Wonderful!
