Thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to be with us today, Berengaria. Why don’t we start by having you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a multi-published author of erotic romance: contemporary, paranormal (ghosts, vampires, fairies and werewolves) and Regency-set historicals. She loves to read all different kinds of romance so that is what she writes: one man/one woman; two women; two men; two men/one woman; three men, two women/one man… Whatever the characters need for their very hot happily-ever-after, Berengaria makes sure they get it.
Was there a defining point in your life when you realized that you wanted to be an author? Did you choose the profession, or did the profession choose you?
I’ve always been a reader and one day I had nothing new to read and nothing old I wanted to reread, so I began to write a book. I sent it to a publisher but still had nothing to read, so I started writing a second book, then a third… The rest, as they say, is history.
What was your first book and how long did it take for it to be published?
My first book was “Intensity” published by Siren BookStrand. It’s the first in the “Forever Yours” series. Each book is a stand-alone story, but they all have recurring characters and are set in the same world.
It took about a year from the time I started writing until the first book was released, but I had several books come out in very quick succession, as I’d sent each of my first three books to different publishing houses.
To date, how many books have you had published?
36.
Do you have any new projects coming up that you’d care to share with us?
I have a new series beginning at Siren BookStrand set in an alternative world, hidden inside modern-day USA. Book one of the “Possessive Passions” series, “Shared Possession” releases 30 June, then “Possess Me in July/August and “Ultimate Possession” in August/September. All are ménages.
Is there a particular sub-genre in which you enjoy writing more than others?
(i.e. paranormal vs. historical vs. contemporary)
I like variety so write across genres and enjoy them all.
How long does it generally take for you to finish a manuscript?
For me the slowest part is getting to know the characters and thinking about the plot. Once I start the actual writing, the book moves fairly quickly. But I only write short books, nothing over 25,000 words.
How much creative input do you have in the cover design for your books?
I write for several different publishers and they’re all different, but in every case I fill in a cover art request sheet so have input into the design.
Do you write full time? If not, how many hours per day do you attempt to dedicate to your writing?
Sadly, like for most authors, the day job is a reality for me. I write in the evenings, at weekends, and on holidays. I would never make notes of plots, character, and dialogue while I was at work *bats eyelashes innocently*.
Do you typically outline your plots before you begin the writing process, or do you write in a more freestyle fashion?
I note down key points I need to hit on the way through the book, but don’t do serious outlining. It’s more a beginning, a few midpoints and the ending. But again, remember I’m only writing fairly short books, not epics.
What has been the most difficult topic you’ve ever approached in your writing?
No difficult topics, but I have to work to make sure the plots are consistent with no holes, and that the world I create is logical.
Of all the characters you’ve created, do you have one in particular who stands
out among the others as a favorite? If so, who and why?
A good Momma never has favorites, but whoever I’m writing at the moment is always in my head demanding their story.
When someone reads one of your books for the first time, what do you hope they take away from it?
The knowledge that everyone, no matter what their problems or flaws, deserves a happy ending.
Are you surprised by the ever growing female fan-base of Male/Male fiction?
What’s not to like about gorgeous naked men?
When did you begin writing in the Male/Male genre? What about it interests you the most?
I started writing MMF ménage, but some of the men don’t want a woman, they just want each other, so I have quite a few MM stories.
What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever received with respect to the art of writing? How did it change the way you approach your craft?
Never stop reading. Never stop writing. Keep polishing. Keep submitting. If you keep doing all of these you will succeed.
Will you share three things you’ve learned about the business of writing since your first publication?
1. It’s a profession, so you need to act professionally at all times.
2. Self promotion is a lot of work, taking precious writing time, but it’s essential.
3. Always read your contract before signing it. Some authors I know didn’t, and have been dismayed later on.
If you were to offer a word of advice to a new author just starting out, what
would it be?
Research the company you’re submitting to. Make sure you agree with their editing rules, their contract, and their policies.
Do you generally have the titles of you work planned before you begin writing, or does that occur later on in the writing process?
I need a title before I move from thinking, to writing the book. Of course, the company may change the title when they contract it, if they already have a book with a similar title.
What is the question you’re most frequently asked by your fans?
Is there going to be a sequel to…
What is your most memorable fan experience?
My very first fan letter. It was so awesome to know someone had not only read my book, but enjoyed it.
How much of yourself, your life experiences, and the people you know manifest themselves into your characters?
None of my heroes or heroines is me. But things that I’ve observed, or that have happened to people I know, may appear in the book.
When you have the chance to sit down and enjoy some quiet reading time, what sorts of books are you most likely to pick up? Who are your favorite authors?
I read very widely. Romance primarily, from sweet to extremely kinky, but also
mystery, crime and other genres.
If you weren’t a writer, what would you be?
A 90-year-old millionaire’s mistress.
Aside from writing, what else do you enjoy doing? Do you have any hobbies?
Is eating chocolate considered a hobby?
If time travel were possible, what time period(s) would you most like to visit? Why?
Regency England. I adore Georgette Heyer and have written several Regency-set romances myself.
If you had the opportunity to sit down to dinner with one famous person, either past or present, who would you choose and why?
Just one? I write ménages remember. I’d like a dinner date with James Bond—any, or all of them.
If we were to look around the desk where you sit to write, what would we find there?
Note pad, pens and pencils, cell phone, glasses, coffee mug, tissues, and my laptop. I never go anywhere without it.
How would you describe your sense of humor? What makes you laugh?
I like clever humor, witty puns. But I also enjoy slapstick comedy.
Do you have an all time favorite fictional character?
James Bond. All of them.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
People who act stupidly then complain about the consequences.
Do you have a favorite personal mantra, quote, or saying that describes your outlook on life and the way you approach each day?
A woman is like a tea bag – you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her
in hot water.
