Title: Whispering Pines Ranch Book 4: Connor’s Courage
Author: SJD “Jo” Peterson
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Characters: John Price, Conner Burnett
POV: 3rd Person
John Price and Conner Burnett have been part of the Whispering Pines Ranch for the past thirty-seven years. A loving couple who have overcome every obstacle thrown at them, John and Conner are a testament to the strength of true love. But now John is in the hospital with a diagnosis of cancer, fighting for his very life.
As his lover struggles, Conner looks back on when they first met. The early seventies wasn’t an easy time to be a gay man, especially in a small country town. Considering John’s pride, Conner’s need to be himself, shame, bitterness, and two stubborn natures, their love story almost wasn’t written. But they beat the odds, and Conner will be damned if he’ll let anyone take John from him now. He had the courage to stand up for what he wanted in 1974. If need be, he’ll go toe to toe with God himself to keep the man he fought so hard to love.
Conner Burnett was thrown out of his childhood home at the age of 17 for being gay and has had to shoulder his share of social torment in a time of so-called Free Love; free for everyone but homosexuals that is. He is a short man who has acquired a staunchness about him that can only be defined as courageous. Conner has been a fixture on the Whispering Pines Ranch since before its current owner, Quinn, was born; having been hired by Quinn’s daddy, Cole Taylor. He has also been in love with John Price, the ranch foreman, for almost just as long.
Conner has reached a point in his life where he is ready to retire and do some travelling with the love of his life at his side. But fate seems to have other plans and stubborn Conner is not happy about it. We lie with him beside his partner as he recollects how they first met, how they overcame the obstacles of the times and fell hopelessly in love with each other. Will Conner get the chance to live the life he and John have dreamed of for many years, or will fate zap his courage and leave him as alone as when he was starting out on his life’s journey at age 17?
Wow! Get yourself a lot of tissues before you begin reading about Conner & John. “Jo” is going to throw down a gauntlet before you riddled with emotions.
When we first encountered Conner in Lorcan’s Desire we were immediately taken with how he presented as personable and wise. Well, now you are going to learn what he had to endure and how his courage is why he is not a bitter old man.
The angst experienced in the previous stories is still present only a little less severe but no less intense. To have two individuals discover just exactly who they are by becoming one in love is truly a unique venue and one so well presented here.
Put your life aside, you won’t be needing it nor will you be allowed to leave when you jump into this tale. Yours is already provided for you as that of a spectator wanting to slap some sense into Conner or John at one point and at another wishing you could just hug them till the cows come home.
Enjoy yourself. It’s all here. Remember, all you need is courage and at the end you will feel so comfortable that when Jess makes his appearance you will want to jump up and run over to him and demand that he tell you all about his journey!
