Title: Strengthened By Fire
Author: Andrew Grey
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
POV: 3rd Person
Lee Staunton and Dirk Krause have been seeing each other for a couple of months when they get the bad news: the firehouse they work at will be closed unless they can come up with the money to complete some maintenance and repairs. The union wants to stand and fight. There’s just one problem: the only suggestion for how to raise the money is Lee’s. And Dirk hates it.
Unfortunately, everyone else thinks Lee’s “Chicken and Beefcake” dinner—which they’ll attend in just their hats, boots, and fire pants—is a great idea, and Lee goes ahead with the organizing. But interference from the borough council and low ticket sales threaten to rain on Lee’s parade. If Dirk can’t put aside his pride and stubborn nature for one night, it could cost both him and Lee their jobs—never mind their relationship.
Dirk & Lee are firefighters at the oldest firehouse in town. They are also boyfriends and are totally accepted by their peers and superiors. Their relationship isn’t shaky but it is in its infancy and therefore both are still figuring out their respective roles.
Their firehouse is one of two being considered for consolidation and their captains have asked for ideas to raise revenue to help maybe stave off the closing of this particular station. Lee comes up with an idea after he sees his lover in partial uniform waiting for a shower after a fire. His idea is greeted with generous approval although Dirk has let it be known he is not on board.
Lee is a definite romantic and Dirk can really be a jerk when he feels threatened. Boundaries are put to the test and feelings are put to question. Will their love prove to be a strong bond or will circumstances serve to dissolve it?
Strengthened By Fire is the sequel to Redemption By Fire where we first encounter Lee & Dirk falling in love. This continuation of their romance appropriately brings into light familiar obstacles often encountered in blossoming love.
The author forces the reader to become intimate with each character and their respective strengths and follies and allows us to grow with them in their quest for requited love and mutual respect.
Not only do we get to experience a budding love story but Mr. Grey also gives us firsthand knowledge of the camaraderie shared by the heroes of firefighting.
Although this story will stand on its own merits, I suggest you first read Redemption By Fire in order to get the full effect of not only the relationship between Dirk & Lee but of their individual personalities as well.
