Title: You Don’t Have to Ask
Author: Mathilde Watson
Publisher: Silver Publishing
Characters: Adam Young, Seth Williams
Sub-Genre: Contemporary Romance
Adam never asked if Seth loved him and he sure as hell never told the man how he felt. The military’s policy of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ kept their times together brief and sporadic, making love an irrelevant consideration–until now.
With the threat of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ hanging over their heads, hooking up for a few hot but hurried encounters was all Adam Young and Captain Seth Williams had over the past ten years. Adam could never resist the opportunity to spend even a few hours in Seth’s arms. Seth’s heart was torn between the two loves of his life; the sea and his life of adventure versus Adam who could give him the love he needs to live on.
Now, six months after the repeal of the hateful law Adam is faced with a terrifying question. The chemistry between them is explosive and undeniable but is it only lust or could it possibly be love?
For the past ten years, Adam has both dreaded and looked forward to spending short amounts of time with his lover, Seth, who is also a Navy Captain. Although they met initially as a one-night stand, over the years Adam has fallen hopelessly head over heels with the Captain, even though their trysts together always very short and often give Adam many bittersweet feelings in the end. When Adam receives a note and flowers that his lover is in town, he knows it’s time for them to have a long heart to heart. Adam is tired of being Seth’s secret and has convinced himself that he means nothing to Seth, but a quick lay when Seth is in town. But, when Adam arrives at the hotel room, there is something different about Seth. He’s more attentive, and is in no rush to leave and Adam can’t help but hope that this time between them will be different. Will Seth finally take a chance on having an ‘out’ relationship with Adam, or is Adam about to get the biggest heartbreak of his life?
I really liked this story. Adam is a very interesting and determined man to keep the relationship between he and Seth going on for ten years. I liked his spunky disposition and his ability to love Seth with his whole heart and soul. He’s a very likeable hero and I couldn’t help but hope that he wasn’t about to be heartbroken by Seth.
When the book first started I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about Seth. Because he is in the military, I totally understood why Seth had to keep their affair a secret, but I couldn’t help but feel like Adam was definitely being strung along by him. But, as soon as Seth made an appearance in the book, my mind about Seth quickly changed. It was obvious that he really loved Adam and I rejoiced in his decision to do what he needed to do to keep Adam into his life. Both heroes are strong men, but they also have an attractive vulnerability that I really enjoyed seeing too.
To my knowledge, I’ve read one other book by Ms. Watson and I’ve really liked both of them. This author has a very addictive way of telling a story and really getting into the heart of her characters. I thought the story moved very smoothly and enjoyed every moment I read about these unique and sexy heroes. My only gripe about the book is that it was shorter than I would have liked. I would have loved to have really seen these two men live together and exist outside of the hotel room. But, I still really liked this story and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a sizzling, sweet, military themed romance.

Seth carefully untangled his legs from Adam’s and scooted away from the sleeping man, slowly pulling free of Adam’s arms. Adam slept on and Seth held his breath, climbing slowly from the bed, careful not to shake the mattress any more than he had to. Once he’d made it across the small motel room and into the bathroom he released his breath, closing the door between him and Adam.
Seth made quick work of cleaning himself up and getting dressed, careful not to make too much noise. He needed to sneak out undetected if he wanted his plan to work. Dressed and groomed, Seth reached under the sink for the note and the long-stemmed red rose he’d hidden there the night before and shut off the bathroom light, opening the door and slipping back into the room where Adam continued to sleep. He made his way out into the room and laid the note and the rose in plain sight on the empty dresser, then began gathering what he needed to take with him.
Seth moved quickly around the room, picking up Adam’s pants from the chair in front of the window, his socks from the floor beside the bed, his shoes from in front of the doorway. He got down on his knees and fished Adam’s shirt out from under the bed and then he dug around in the tangled sheets, careful not to disturb his dreaming lover while he searched for Adam’s discarded boxers. Adam continued to sleep soundly, sprawled on his side across the mattress with his hands tucked up under his chin, blissfully unaware of Seth’s actions.
His blond curls fell over his cheek in soft waves that rippled with every breath and for a moment, Seth considered forgetting all about his scheme. The temptation to crawl back into bed and wake Adam with demanding kisses kept him close to the bedside. Seth desperately wanted to roll the younger man over so he could ravish his lover again. The gentle rise and fall of his chest with each breath made Adam seem so young and vulnerable, and the swell of his ass poking out from under the covers had Seth aching with want, but no.
Seth stopped himself and pulled his hand back just short of caressing the pale, creamy skin of Adam’s buttocks. His fingers itched to delve between the cheeks and seek out the hidden treasure there… but now wasn’t the time. Adam needed his sleep. The dark circles under his eyes attested to the fact. With any luck, the man would sleep until noon at least. A quick glance at the clock on the bedside table told Seth he had roughly six hours. He needed to move quickly if he wanted to get everything done and get back before Adam freaked out. Seth didn’t want Adam to become too agitated. If his lover was frightened or upset it would ruin the surprise.
Seth took a deep breath and stepped away from the bed, clutching Adam’s clothes to his chest like a shield, protecting him from temptation. With great effort he managed to turn away from Adam’s naked body and push aside his fierce desire to satisfy his lust and throw all his hard work away. Oh, God, how he hated surprises! He hated them with a passion! But Adam loved them, and Seth loved Adam. And Adam deserved to know it…
