But when he finally gathers the courage to speak to the man, Travis quickly realizes that former novelist Drew Clifton suffers from aphasia: Drew can understand everything Travis says, but he is unable to speak or write.
The two lonely men form a friendship that soon blossoms into romance. But communication is only one of their challenges—there’s also Travis’s inexperience with love and his precarious financial situation. If words are the bridge between two people, what will keep them together?
Review:
Wow! For a novella, Speechless by Kim Fielding packed a lot of punch! I was immediately entranced by these two unique and well-written heroes and the beautiful love story they told.
Travis Miller is a blue collared worker who doesn’t have much going in his life. He’s lonely and stays home with his beloved cat, but otherwise his life is pretty much the same way every day. But lately, he’s started to notice a sexy man playing his guitar he walks by on his way home from work. Soon, this mysterious man and the music he plays become something that Travis begins to look forward to after a long, miserable day from work.
Unable to get the quiet, musician off of his mind, Travis finds the courage to approach the handsome man to introduce himself. Soon, he finds out the man has a physical illness that keeps him from speaking and writing, but this does not detain Travis from getting to know the mysterious man better, and through practical and clever ways he finds out the man’s name is Drew and they learn to communicate together.
As the two men start to form a friendship between them, their attraction to each other becomes very intense. Soon, they find themselves together and both men are not lonely any more. Just when things start to really look up for them, Travis’s job comes to an end and he must relocate if he wants to continue to work. Will this force the two men to break apart and lose the greatest love and friendship that they’ve ever known?
I loved this book! I adored both Travis and Drew and the love, respect and friendship they had between them made this a breathtakingly beautiful read for me. I appreciated the way they learned to communicate together and enjoyed watching their relationship grow into something very special.
Both men are everyday people. Drew once was a famous writer, but his handicap keeps him from writing and communicating from most people. This has caused him to be very lonely and when Travis pops into his life, it once again gives him some meaning and something to look forward too. Also, Travis too, was a wonderful character to get to know. I thought his financial problems as well as his problems with keeping a steady job read realistic, and I loved how his dreary life became colorful once again because of Drew’s love and influence.
One of my gripes about the story is: It is way too short! As soon as it ended I felt cheated because I wanted more of this amazing couple. I only hope that this author will take pity on this reader (and anyone else who reads this story) and hopefully continue the story of these two amazing men. I would love to see how things continue to change and evolve between them and in all honesty, I’d just love to read more about them period.
This is the first book I’ve read by Kim Fielding and it definitely won’t be my last. I appreciated the easy style of writing this author has and her ability to really grip this reader into the intriguing lives of her characters, make this author one I’ll be actively seeking more material from in the future. Highly Recommended!!

Your review made me want to read this story. The story wounds very well done, and I love the idea that these wound like people living in the real world, dealing with difficulties from the real world, and that they’re not flawlessly perfect men. Go, Kim Fielding!
Oh Ruth! Please give it a try! It’s really great and the way both heroes handle his disability is creative and wonderful. I loved these two men together, I only wish the book had been longer!
