Review:
Kellan Murphy needed a fresh start. When his lover tragically dies, Kellan knew he needed a change, so he left his job and life behind and moved to the Florida Keys. Now he’s a fisherman and also gives sea tours to the tourists, and although he loves his new life, he knows there’s something missing about it too. One day as Kellan is fishing alone, he surprisingly catches a very handsome merman. Even more surprisingly, the merman, Jaran, tells him he was once a human, but was saved by an ‘angel’ as shaped as a mermaid who could only save him by making him merman. Even though Kellan is amazed by the handsome merman talking to him on his boat, he can’t help but be immediately attracted and captivated by the fascinating merman.
To Kellan’s happiness, Jaran too feels the deep connection and attraction between them, and once Kellan finds out that Jaran can temporarily morph back into a human because of his magical ring, Kellan immediately jumps at the chance to spend time with the beautiful Jaran. As the two form a friendship and fall in love with each other, problems soon arise. Jaran cannot live on land, and Kellan cannot live in the sea. Plus, there are outside forces pulling the lovers’ apart. Will Kellan and Jaran find a way to be together, or will they be forever separated and both live with a broken heart?
First, I have to point out that I love this cover! I think it sets the story quite perfectly and its beauty really enhances the story itself. I also thought that both Kellan and Jaran were very interesting and likeable characters. I wasn’t that far into the story before I found myself wanting these two heroes to find a way to be together. I understood why both men had to face their fears and fight to find a way for their love to survive and I thoroughly enjoyed watching them work to have a life with one another.
I also really liked Ms. Sawyer’s ability to sweep me into the setting of the story. I could easily envision Kellan’s life in the Florida Keys and Jaran’s life in the sea. I loved her descriptive and creative storytelling ability and I thought the premise of the story was extremely interesting throughout the storyline. There were times I felt there were a few things washed over too quickly and I was even confused by some unanswered and unsaid things going on in the plot itself. Because it is a fantasy romance, there is an aspect of unbelievability about it. There is also a fairytale-ish quality to it that I enjoyed and since I like fantasy-themed stories, and I really appreciated the strong romance between the two heroes I was able to overlook some things and really like the story itself.
All in all I really enjoyed this sweet romantic tale between the human and the merman. Since this is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Sawyer, I’m definitely very happy that I gave this sweet and sexy romance a try. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author and recommend this book for those who crave an interesting, fairytale-fantasy on a hot summer’s day.
