One Small Thing by Piper Vaughn and M.J. O’Shea

“Daddy” is not a title Rue Murray wanted, but he never thought he’d have sex with a woman either. Now he’s the unwitting father of a newborn named Alice. Between bartending and cosmetology school, Rue doesn’t have time for babies, but he can’t give her up. What Rue needs is a babysitter, and he’s running out of options. Erik Van Nuys is a sci-fi novelist with anxiety issues to spare. He doesn’t like people in general, and he likes babies even less. Still, with his royalties dwindling, he could use the extra cash. Reluctantly, he takes on the role of manny—and even more reluctantly, he finds himself falling for Alice and her flamboyant father.

Rue and Erik are as different as two people can be, and Alice is the unlikeliest of babies, but Rue has never been happier than when Alice and Erik are by his side. At least, not until he receives an offer that puts all his dreams within reach and he’s forced to choose: the future he’s always wanted, or the family he thought he never did.

College Boys by Daisy Harris

Title: College Boys
Author: Daisy Harris
Publisher: Siren Publishing
Pages: 115
Characters: Chris Fischer, Peter Cohen
POV: 3rd
Sub-Genre: Contemporary, Erotic Romance, Series
Kisses: 4.5

Blurb:

When soccer star Chris Fischer moves next door to an openly gay classmate, he doesn’t realize the wall between their rooms will be so thin he’ll hear his neighbor’s every move. But soon he and Peter become friends, and Chris is intrigued—imagining what happens on the other side of the wall.

Active on the Queer Student Council, Peter Cohen wishes he wasn’t so damn hot for his straight neighbor. He can’t tell if Chris is flirting or in denial or what, but Chris’s innocent overtures lure Peter into flirtation that throws his world into chaos. Peter doesn’t want to date a closet case, but he desperately, passionately wants Chris.

Soon Chris must choose whether to run away from his new feelings or embrace a relationship with the guy he loves. And Peter must decide if he can give his heart to a guy who hasn’t yet figured it all out.

Review:

This has been a hard year for Chris Fischer. He is a popular soccer jock that is having a difficult time coming to terms with his mother recently passing away. Because of the stress and grief this has given him, he has a hard time concentrating on his studies in his shared dorm room. Unable to concentrate, he puts in a request for a single room and is both horrified and intrigued when he finds out his next door neighbor is the very out and sexy, Peter Cohen. Chris has been interested in Peter since they both attended a camping trip last year, but is confused by the attraction he feels for the interesting man. Since the walls that separate their rooms are paper thin, both Chris and Peter hear everything the other person is doing and the more Chris listens to whatever Peter is doing in his room, the more captivated he becomes of him. Because Chris is unable to keep away from Peter, a hesitant friendship develops between them that soon turn into a heated attraction that neither man will deny. But, Chris is confused by these budding feelings and the physical temptation they have between them and isn’t sure if he should act on it. There are members of his soccer team that does not tolerate homosexuality and Chris is soon forced to make a decision that will change his life forever.

I really liked this book a lot. It has a very fast-paced storyline that kept me interested and fascinated by both of the main characters. Both men are prepared for the sudden intense feelings they have for one another, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop as the story progressed. At first glance, both Chris and Peter give the impression of being almost totally opposite of one another, but as they got to know each another, they found they had a lot more in common than either man realized they had.

As the story progresses, both Peter and Chris go through a lot of soul searching and make some major changes in their lives. Chris in particular has had such a hard year, there are times he isn’t the nicest guy in the world, and he does a few things to Peter that I didn’t care for. But, in the end I did understand the inner conflict he’s going through. His life is changing and isn’t going as Chris once thought it would go, so he has to deal with a lot of issues. I thought this author did an excellent job showing the inner conflict and confusion that both Chris and Peter go through, and once they come to the conclusion they belong together, I enjoyed watching them fight to have something meaningful between them.

Since College Boys is the first book in the ‘Men of Holsum College’ series, I’m looking forward to reading more about these intriguing and well-written characters. Ms. Harris has a straightforward, easy style of writing that I enjoyed and I’m anxious to read more stories written by her.

Zach Sweets and Zombies Tour

Growing a Love for Zombies

People often asked me why I’m obsessed with zombies. They are the disgusting creatures that exist in the films and books. What can I say? They are fascinating creatures, too. Think about it, if they were to exist, wouldn’t you be curious as to what was going on inside of their heads? Did they scream for help but a disease that was making him/her doing the horrible things had trapped them? Maybe disease was their excuse for becoming a cannibal?

Questions can go on and on for rest of your life until it actually exists. Now, the real answer to the reason why zombies have been one of my obsessions: they scare me. I like to challenge myself by facing the creatures/objects that is likely to scare me off. To me, that’s a sense of adventure. In my opinion, I think zombies are the scariest one. Sure, there are werewolves and vampires that should be on the top of the list. But werewolves and vampires can act human when they want to. Zombies couldn’t. There’s no way to reason with a zombie because all zombies want is to eat human flesh.

In addition to werewolves and vampires, they can be sexy anytime they want to. Zombie, on other hand, can’t stay sexy. Their body decayed after every minute they wander the Earth. Skins falling apart, bruises show more, blood turns black, bones easily become breakable and the list goes on. They will smell so horrible that can make you puke. Their spirits fade. In some people’s mind, they’re the bodies for demon to possess. Except the demons can’t control its mind since zombies go on their instincts and that is food. Any sight of blood, they go crazy. Not an ideal body to possess, don’t you agree?

Watching one of my favorite shows The Walking Dead makes me fall in love with zombies all over again. They were exactly what I picture in my head. How their bodies change when they’d been turned into one of them. My heart beat faster every time the dead-walkers were chasing the survivors. While witnessing the events on the shows, I can imagine if it was me that was running away from the large number of zombies. I definitely will be screaming for my life and run as fast as I ever can. Then I started to imagine, what if I have a boyfriend with me and what would I have done?

That’s when Zombie Rain comes in. With love, anything is possible and love gives the strength to survive. Jake is a weak character until his love has gotten stronger then he becomes the strongest character in the book.

“Rex,” I wailed. As I was sobbing, my eyes started to hurt badly. A powerful purple shot out, and I stared right at the zombie king. The king’s orange laser collided with my purple, but my pain was far stronger. It was enough to force him backwards through the air until his back hit a tree. The trunk shattered.

Now you see Jake has gotten much stronger after a zombie hurt Rex. Love is one of best way to make an individual become stronger than s/he ever get in s/he entire life. I know for the fact that it is all true because I’ve experienced it myself in the past. I was driving and my ex-lover was in the passenger seat. A car ran through red light and hit us. The door on the passenger side was stuck and I open it as if it wasn’t even stuck. It was the moment when I want to get my ex-lover out of the car before it exploded (Yeah, I watched too much action films). The next day, I tried to open the door again and I couldn’t. Not even a budge. That’s how I apply the strength to Zombie Rain. It was all adrenaline rushes.

Do you love zombies or do you hate them?

Blurb:

Jake’s world is torn apart when his son dies, killed by a little girl who has infected him with a strange disease. Soon, Jake’s entire hometown is overtaken by the disease. A disease that turns them into flesh-craving monsters. The combination of tragedy and horror is almost more than Jake can take, but then he meets Rex, a man who has been struggling through the horror in search of more survivors. The two men travel together, searching for answers and other survivors, the growing bond between them the only bright light in their dark world.

But then that light is taken brutally away, and Jake is left struggling to find it again, fighting against insurmountable odds and growing despair …

Seizing It by Chris T. Kat

Title: Seizing It
Author: Chris T. Kat
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Pages: 202
Characters: Kit Hall, Dale miller
POV: 1st
Sub-Genre: Contemporary Romance, Hero with Disability
Kisses: 4

Blurb:

Veterinary receptionist Kit Hall doesn’t get close to people, and for good reasons: his epilepsy makes him feel like a freak, and his ex was an abusive jerk. But that doesn’t always deter people from wanting to get close to Kit. When a Good Samaritan saves him from his wannabe boyfriend in a parking lot, he doesn’t expect to find the guy so attractive. He definitely doesn’t expect his savior to turn out to be his new boss.

Dale Miller, veterinarian and old-fashioned guy, sees right through Kit’s prickly facade. He likes what he sees, but convincing Kit to give a relationship a shot isn’t going to be a walk in the park. Of course, for Kit, resisting Dale isn’t going to be easy either.

Review:

Kit Hall has epilepsy and for the past year he’s kept the disease under control with medication, and doing what he can to keep as much stress as possible out of his life. Because he’s been seizure-free, Kit’s enjoyed having more freedom in his life, and this freedom is something Kit is almost desperate to hold onto. One day, Kit is attacked in a parking lot by a man who hopes to be an important person in Kit’s life. Even though, Kit is stronger than he once was, he still is unable to fend off his attacker, so he is relieved and even a little embarrassed with this handsome, bear of a man comes to his rescue.

Even though Kit is grateful to his rescuer, Dale Miller, he’s humiliated and a little more than angry at being overpowered by his attacker. Because of this, he says some not-so-nice things and ends up embarrassing himself even more. The next day when Kit goes to work, he’s mortified when he realizes his rescuer, Dale, is now his new boss. To make matters worse, Kit is beginning to feel like both his life and health are starting to spin out of control. Will Kit be able to keep his life and disease under control and will Kit allow the sweet and thoughtful Dale to break down the walls Kit has built around his heart?

I really liked this book. I thought Kit was an interesting and somewhat unique hero. He’s stronger than what he realizes and because he’s been smothered by concerned friends and family members, he has a tendency to rebel against anyone who offers to help him. Kit has a snarky, sarcastic humor that I really liked. But he constantly fights to be seen as something more than an epileptic, and because of this, he has a chip on his shoulder and won’t accept help without immediately assuming it’s because others see him as weak. It’s because of this, that more than once, Kit has a tendency to jump to conclusions instead of finding out the facts and this gets him into trouble throughout the book.

There were times I wanted to grab Kit and tell him to chill out some. He’s on the defensive (a lot) and even though I understood why he’s leery of allowing people to help or to be close to him, I wanted him to sometimes just be gracious and accept the love and friendship that others try to give him. Kit is usually contrite after he blows up, as he should be, but it would have been nice to see him not be so prickly all the time. What I did like was Kit’s determination to live his life as normally as possible. His sheer stubbornness and refusal to give up makes him a strong and formidable hero in my eyes.

Dale is a wonderful man. Where Kit is high-maintenance (I’m not referring to Kit’s epilepsy) Dale is calm and thoughtful. Because Kit and Dale are opposite in many ways, they really fit together and I truly liked them as a couple. I liked Dale’s kindness and determination to be more in Kit’s life than just his boss, and it’s because of Dale’s stubbornness, he’s able to tear down the wall of ice Kit has built around his heart…brick by brick. Because the book is told in first person, with Kit telling the story, we don’t get to learn a lot about Dale. He remains more of a mystery than I would have liked, but I still cared for him and enjoyed watching him worm his way into Kit’s life and heart.

Even though I really liked these characters and their story, I wish this book had been longer. There were a few unanswered questions and, in my opinion, I’m hoping this is because the author plans on writing more about Kit and Dale in the future. If you are looking for a fast-paced book with interesting characters, Seizing it, is definitely for you.

Blurb:

Meet Chase Chavez: bartender, ex-law student, and unofficial matchmaker. Traumatized by a past breakup, Chase has spent the past three years compensating for his own loneliness by helping his friends find dates, but when he meets Bryan, he finds himself fighting emotions he never thought he’d face again. Bryan’s belief in Chase and their relationship is unshakeable; Chase is feeling nothing but shaken. Can he risk it all and take the plunge, not knowing if Bryan will be there to catch him?

Review:

Good gracious, the passage where we met Bryan was (hold on my catching breath) hilarious. The comedic moments don’t stop there. The flirty and dirty (playful) pool game had me rolling. Their first kiss was also realistic and one many of us could relate to. I mean, who hasn’t bumped noses once or twice.

What I liked about Bryan was he never gave up on the man he came to love. Believe me, Chase had his douche moments and made it hard for anyone to consider staying with him. For example, when he sent Oliver in his place for the date with Bryan, I wanted to grab Chase by the collar and give him a piece of my mind.

Their actual successful first date was very steamy and sweet. What I also loved about it was you’d expect the men to kiss and immediately hit the sheets; however, Alex changed it up and had the men decide to wait mutual feelings were felt. That’s rare in a love story and frankly rare in real life. It’s nice to read that someone feels a first sexual moment in a new relationship can be heightened and more intimate if two people actually care for one another. Bravo, Alex!

Living in the Now by Rawiya

Excerpt

Bryan finished swallowing and peered into Mara’s deep brown orbs. He sat his glass on the nightstand and took her hands into his own. “Mara, I want you to be a permanent part of my life with Damien. I want both of you. Is that something you’d be open to?”

Without hesitation she replied, “Yes. I told you it’s what I’ve thought about.”

He breathed a sigh of relief. “I’m glad you are, Mara. I know you mentioned it but I still worried…”

“Not sure why, babe. I want this.”

Bryan brought her into him and hugged her tightly. “I know he’ll like you, Mara. You’re exactly what I’ve been looking for and I’m sure he’ll feel the same.”

Mara returned the kiss. “I hope so. You really are unique.”

Bryan’s mouth felt like the Sahara. He couldn’t have been happier about her response. While he finished his water, “You really are somethin’, you know? I can’t believe how easy you are to talk to.”

Mara handed him the bottle. “Hon, I try not to worry about things. Life’s too short to do that. I’m just glad you’ve been honest with me.”

“I had to, babe. I really care for you, Mara. Even though we just met, I just feel like you’re the one I want to be with Damien and me. You’re everything I’ve hoped for.” Bryan put the wine down before holding up his glass to hers.
“You’re exactly what I’ve wished for too.”

Fox Hunt by Chris Quinton

Title: Fox Hunt
Author: Chris Quinton
Publisher: Manifold Press
Pages: 200
Characters: Robert Rees, Adam Courtney (Fox)
POV: 1st
Sub-Genre: Contemporary, Mystery, Paranormal Romance
Kisses: 5

Blurb:

Robert Rees, full-time librarian, part-time art restorer, is called in to finish a commission when his father goes into hospital – a pair of Elizabethan portraits on oak panelling, Adam Courtney and Ann Darcy. Trouble is, there’s more interest in the paintings than Rob ever bargained for; a lot of people want to get their hands on such priceless treasures, and they’re not always particular about their methods. Just as well he’s got his brother’s mysterious friend Fox on hand to look out for him, then, isn’t it? Or, for that matter … is it?

Review:

The blurb is pretty straightforward about what the premise of what Fox Hunt is about, so I won’t spend much time rehashing it. I also do not want to spoil any of interesting twists and turns the plot has throughout this book, so l’m going to tread lightly here without hopefully giving too much away.

Robert Rees thinks he’s an ordinary guy with an ordinary life, but when he’s asked to restore two portraits, Robert won’t believe he lives an average life ever again. What lies ahead for him in this well-written, fast-paced book is a mystery, an evil villain and sexy and mysterious hero who will not only give Robert an adventure of a lifetime, but be the love of his life as well.

Fox Hunt is told in first person through Robert’s eyes. Normally, first person is not my favorite point of view in romance, but because Robert is such an interesting, honorable and likeable person, I enjoyed the story being told through his eyes. Since he truly believes he’s just an average Joe, Robert’s surprised by the sudden danger and intrigue that is now in his life. One of the things that I thought was very refreshing about Robert is that he is truly a very nice guy who doesn’t really expect really good or bad things to happen to him. In the beginning of the book, he doesn’t really believe he’s that attractive, and he’s beginning to think he’ll never really someone to spend his life with him.

When Robert meets a man called ‘Fox’, he’s immediately intrigued by the mysterious and very attractive man. But even though Fox is pleasing to Robert’s eyes, he doesn’t trust him. Once the men are almost forced to be around each other, Robert begins to see there is a lot more to the fascinating man that meets the eye. The more Robert learns and cares for Fox, the more he’s forced accept things he didn’t think were possible. Robert also has some major life changing decisions he must make, and I thought all of the challenges, whether big or small, that were thrown his way, Robert handles them not only thoughtfully, but realistically as well.

I really loved the physical and emotional chemistry between Robert and Fox. I also loved the witty and intelligent banter between them, and I found myself captivated by their relationship. They were an easy couple to rally behind and hope they find a way to be together and throughout it all, Fox Hunt delivered what I love most about reading this genre and that’s romance. Chris Quinton is a new author for me, and after reading this book, this author has become someone I’ll actively look to read more books written by her. From start to finish, Fox Hunt is a delightful, sexy read and I highly recommend it.

Who is this man? What is his dark secret? Is he responsible for the trail of bodies across the city?

CONTENT ADVISORY: This title contains one short m/f scene which is not pivotal to the plot.

Review:

For months, Detective Max Bowman has been investigating the mysterious deaths of the victims being drained of their blood and then tossed away like trash. Having few leads, he decides to drink his frustrations away at the local watering hole. Almost as soon as he arrives, he is flirted with a young man who continues to buy him drinks until he is more than a little drunk. Soon, the young man ushers him outside with the promise of some illicit and naughty fun in the alleyway. But, before Max knows what’s going on, he is attacked and robbed by the young man and his friend with the intention of Max being left for dead.

Carter Grey is a hungry vampire on the hunt for his latest victim. While sitting in the shadows of the bar, he notices and is immediately drawn to the handsome Max. Instinctively knowing that the young man plans to do Max harm, he finds himself following them outside where he witnesses Max being beaten and almost killed. Going against his own killer instinct, Carter saves Max and uncharacteristically brings him to his home so Max can heal. After Carter saves Max, he is conflicted by the emotional pull he has toward him, and his behavioral habit of usually killing humans instead of having a relationship with them. But, once Max awakens and they begin to talk, the spark of attraction between them turns into a blaze that will not be denied. But, what will happen when Max finds out that Carter is vampire, and if Carter connected to the killings he’s been investigating?

I really loved this book! I thought both Max and Carter were interesting and intriguing characters that kept me captivated with the story they told. Both heroes are not perfect, they are flawed and often tormented characters forced to make a hard decisions about what they want and what they’re both instinctively need to do. I thought both heroes were strong men that were thrown in an almost impossible situation, but somehow manage to fall in love and still manage to solve the mystery of the killings that Max is investigating. Neither man is really looking for love. Max has come to believe love will really never happen for him, and Carter has told himself he’s nothing but a killing machine/monster and doesn’t deserve or really believe in love. I really enjoyed watching these two men work through all of their emotional baggage and realize that their love was worth fighting for.

Carter was a very unique vampire. He’s unapologetic about having to feed and kill humans for food. At first, he doesn’t really have much of a conscience; he believes does what he’s instinctively programed to do…which is being a killer. Even though Carter can come across as a very cold hearted person, I couldn’t help but like him. I understood why Max saw something in him worth saving, and I really enjoyed watching Carter’s character evolve as the novel progressed. The chemistry between Carter and Max is so sizzling hot, I swear on more than one occasion, my e-reader steamed up from the intensity between them. I truly loved them together and enjoyed every moment they shared together in this book.

I’m afraid there will be some people who will shy away from this book because of the M/F warning on the blurb. Yes, there is a VERY small incident between Carter and a female, but she really means nothing to him. Carter IS bisexual, but honestly she is nothing but a meal in Carter’s eyes. I hope that this will not keep some readers away, because it is just a small blip in the story itself and it certainly did not keep me from really enjoying the journey Carter and Max had together.

Thirst is a unique and fast-paced story that kept me captivated with the storyline from start to finish. In a world of sweet and innocent vampires, it was refreshing to read something different. I was also intrigued by Lyle, who is Carter’s nemesis, and was heartbroken from the loss of his soul-mate. Although the ending ends happily, I can’t help but hope Ms. Worrall writes more about these characters *cough* Lyle *cough* in the future.
