Love is a Whirlwind by M.D. Grimm

Title: Love is a Whirlwind
Author: M.D. Grimm
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Pages: 114
Characters: Caleb, Ryan (Whirlwind)
POV: 3rd
Sub-Genre: Paranormal, Contemporary, Romance
Kisses: 4.5

Blurb:

Ryan and Caleb became the best of friends while Caleb taught Ryan as best he could about being human. Born a bull shifter named Whirlwind, Ryan was taken in by Caleb’s mother, who wanted to protect him—just as Caleb did. Their time together leads to deeper feelings… and now they’ve decided to give a relationship a chance. Unfortunately, Ryan is kidnapped, and Caleb has to call in the Agency—an organization that protects shifters—or their new life together will end before it ever starts.

Review:

The moment the young, bull Whirlwind arrived at Caleb’s mother’s ranch, Caleb immediately has a surprising connection with him. Not understanding why he would bond with an animal, Caleb finds himself becoming more and more drawn to the prize bull. Since Whirlwind is being trained to become a star in the bull-riding rodeo circuit, they spend a lot of time together, and Caleb finds himself telling Whirlwind things he’s never told another soul. One day, when Whirlwind shifts into a young man named, Ryan, in front of Caleb’s eyes, he’s confused but intrigued by the bull shape-shifter. Soon, with Caleb’s guidance Ryan starts becoming more comfortable with his human counterpart, and Whirlwind becomes the champion bull he was destined to become.

As time goes by, both Ryan and Caleb become more attached and attracted to each other. When they finally admit to these feelings, both are unprepared for the intense emotions they have for one another. But, there are people who believe that all shape-shifters should be eliminated, so when Ryan is kidnapped, Caleb must enlist help from ‘The Agency’ who are people who do whatever it takes to save and protect the shape-shifters. Will Caleb and an agent from the Agency be able to save Ryan from his kidnapper?

I really liked this book a lot. To my knowledge, I’ve never read a book with a bull shape-shifter before, and I thought the storyline and both heroes were unique, and this made Love is a Whirlwind a fresh and interesting read. I liked Caleb’s determination to save Ryan and to make him become part of his human life. I thought both Caleb and Ryan had really good chemistry together and the love scenes they had together was very gratifying and sizzling hot!

Ryan (Whirlwind) is also a very interesting character. In many ways he’s innocent and naïve about living as a human, which doesn’t always go along with what he’s lived and learned as living as a bull. I liked the camaraderie between Ryan and Caleb, and it was very apparent throughout the book that these two men not only loved each other, but they liked and respected each other as well.

There isn’t a lot of angst in this book, but it still had some interesting twists and turns throughout the storyline. Love is a Whirlwind is a very fast-pace, creatively sexy read that I highly enjoyed and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

The Last Paladin 1-3 by Vaughn R. Demont

Title: The Last Paladin 1-3
Author: Vaughn R. Demont
Publisher: Torquere Press
Pages: 171
Characters: Lennox Kingsley, Karden, Darren
POV: 1st
Sub-Genre: Erotic Romance, Fantasy
Kisses: 5

Blurb:

Closeted Pagan and self-professed prude Lennox Kingsley was only looking earn his college degree and get his life started, but a chance encounter in the park leads him to the life he was destined to have as a Knight of Pan. As he walks the path of the Paladin, he will face ordeals, battle demons and vampires, forge relationships with his fellow Knights both stalwart and steamy, and still manage to maintain a 3.4 GPA.

Review:

Lennox Kingsley is ready for a change in his life. Before he heads off to college, on the day of the Samhain, he participates in a Pagan ritual with some friends where he professes his life and devotion as a Knight for Pan. During and after the ceremony, Lennox doesn’t really take his vows that seriously. Instead, he’s more interested in his studies and going through the everyday existence of college life. Before he leaves the ceremony, he’s given a golden fluted looking pendant by a fellow Pagan to wear. Lennox isn’t really thrilled about the gift, but since he doesn’t want to insult he friends, he agrees to wear it and goes on to college, without thinking that much more about it. One day as he’s taking his daily jog, he’s approached by a large, handsome man who shamelessly flirts and suggests a heated sexual tryst between them. Since Lennox doesn’t drink, sleep around or dance, he turns the mysterious man, Karden down. Karden is surprised by this and tells Lennox he isn’t worthy of wearing the unusual pendant and snatches it off of his neck and runs off with it.

Lennox is furious that Karden does this, and remembers the club the mysterious man had mentioned that he worked at. Since Lennox is determined to get his pendant back, he goes to this club after class and seeks out Karden. But, once Lennox arrives, he immediately knows that this club is not like anything he’s ever seen before. He’s soon ushered into a backroom where he meets not only Karden, that now looks like he’s a Satyr, but the god Pan himself. Lennox soon finds himself thrown into the dark world of the magic of Pan, and comes to realize that the vow he had taken so carelessly before will be his life’s greatest reward.

I really enjoyed every minute of The Last Paladin. Lennox is a really likeable character, and he’s definitely a typical eighteen year old man when the book starts. As many young men are at his age, he’s a little arrogant and doesn’t always think things through before he does them. His character really evolves as the story progresses, and Lennox goes through a lot of changes and matures by the end of the book. The mysterious and magical world of Satyrs, Vampires, Demons and other mystical beings really turns Lennox’s own existence upside down. It was interesting to watch how he handled the many different twists and turns that was thrown his way, while trying to stay alive and defend the honor of his Lord, Pan…even when he’s not prepared or experienced enough to do it.

Karden and Lennox have a pretty hot chemistry between them. One of the surprises of the book was they also added another Satyr, Darren, into their relationship making it a threesome. The sex scenes between the three together practically steamed up my computer screen because it was so sizzling hot! Whew! Keep a glass of ice water beside you as you read this book because you’re definitely going to need it to cool off! Another thing I really appreciated about their relationship was the camaraderie and the genuine feelings they truly felt for each other, which made me love this book and the characters within it even more. I liked how Karden and Darren were in many ways total opposites in the way they approach things, both of them were good for Lennox. There is also a twist within the relationship between all of them that I admit I didn’t see coming, but in the end I think it worked out as it should.

The Last Paladin is one of my favorite fantasy romances I’ve read. I love the descriptive and almost lyrical way that Mr. Demont wrote this story. I was immediately captivated by the fresh and creative characters and addictive storytelling ability that this author has. I’m anxiously awaiting more from this author and hopefully more books in this series. If you love a fast-paced, erotic fantasy romance then The Last Paladin is definitely a good choice for you.

A Stranger in Triva by Marten Weber

Title: A Stranger in Triva
Author: Marten Weber
Publisher: Aquarius Publishing
Pages: 355
Characters: multiple characters
POV: First Person, Third Person
Sub-Genre: Anthology, Gay Fiction
Kisses: 5

Blurb:

A Stranger in Triva is a cycle of interconnected stories about gay men and the people they affect.

Each story offers a glimpse into a relationship, from Russia and India a century ago; in Asia, the US and Mexico today.

These stories speak of love and devotion, of longing and erotic pleasure, but also of responsibility, of honor, and of deceit.

As the reader travels from story to story, a magical narrative emerges which connects all the protagonists in the book across space and time.

Marten Weber has created an expertly executed and wonderfully written cohesive cycle that will forever change your mind about what gay story-telling can be.

These are imaginative and beautiful stories, spanning a century and ten countries, ingeniously linked and told in the educated and engaging prose that has become Weber’s trademark.

Review:

A Stranger in Triva appears to be an anthology–a collection of stories that at first seem unrelated, even in theme. Each of the stories is set in a different locale, spanning several continents. By the end of the novel they begin to meld together into an epic love story.

At times I was frustrated with the characters. The author describes the thoughts and feelings of his characters in a manner which seems to emphasize their cynicism and pessimistic outlook. Often the characters make sweeping generalizations about groups of people– their religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality. I don’t like when an entire group of people are characterized a certain way. Example: all Americans view sarcasm as being arrogant and all Europeans view it as humorous. In one of the stories, I had to laugh when the protagonist insisted that mm romance was written by women and for women and that all gay men hate it. (I am a gay man who writes mm romance and I have thousands of gay male readers.)

My opinion of this story is that it dispelled a lot of the labels we place on each other…by exposing them. I felt that it was a statement that we do not have to view the glass as half full. We do not have to always criticize other people. Materialism, snobbery, and arrogance are sadly mainstays of our culture–and even more so in the “gay community”. They are part of the human condition, but it is possible to rise above them. A happily-ever-after may be unlikely, but it’s a dream worth aspiring towards.

The writing was magnificent, the wordsmithing exceptional. Humor, tragedy, lust, and excruciating emotion are woven together in A Stranger in Triva to create a poignant, thought-provoking must-read.

Spoken From The Heart by Jane Davitt

Title: Spoken From the Heart
Author: Jane Davitt
Publisher: Torquere Press
Pages: 298
Characters: Julian Melville, Alex Martin
POV: 3rd
Sub-Genre: Erotic Romance, Historical
Kisses: 5

Blurb:

As an up and coming actor in the city of Sorrent, Julian always has the perfect words to say, even if someone else wrote them. But when it comes to wooing the innocent young country man he’s rescued and befriended, he’s going to find that the only words that count are spoken from the heart, not the page.

Alex is innocent, eager to please, friendly, lovable — and a trouble magnet. With the ducal court offering both temptations and danger, and the theater at risk from the duke’s temper, both Alex and Julian find it difficult to separate friend from foe. Julian’s ambitions drive him, even as his heart tries to lead the way, and Alex tumbles from one scrape to the next as the city swelters in the summer heat and sickness stalks the streets.

When Julian is faced with an impossible choice that will change his life, he’s left with no script to follow, no stage direction to guide him. But if they’re to make it unscathed and take a final bow, they’ll need to be sure of only one thing. Each other.

Review:

Julian Melville is an up and coming actor who has worked his way up in the small theatre company is works for. As a disowned son of a nobleman, he’s fought hard to make ends meet and make a decent living honing his craft. When the most popular actor within the company dies, Julian sees this as an ample opportunity to fill his shoes and become the star of the theatre that he desperately wishes to become. When he comes across a young man being abused in a dank alleyway, Julian surprises himself by intervening and saving the young man’s life. When he sees how malnourished and innocent the young man is, he uncharacteristically cannot send him on his way, instead Julian finds himself taking the young man under his wing until he can get back on his feet.

A week ago, Alex left the simple life of his parents’ country home for some adventures in the big city. Since then he’s been robbed, beaten, abused and homeless and he’s unsure of what to do next. When the handsome Julian comes to his rescue, Alex is more than a little embarrassed by the situation he was in and very gracious for Julian’s help. They soon become fast friends and when Julian finds him a job working as a carpenter in the theatre, Alex knows his bad luck is changing for the better. Now if he can just get the worldly Julian to see him more than just a friend and love him as deeply as he loves the up and coming actor, he knows everything he’s fought for will be worth it.

I really loved this book! Both Alex and Julian practically live and breathe off of the written page and the love they shared together was truly a sweet and romantic one. I admit, at first I wasn’t sure if I would care for the self-centered Julian. He guards his heart as jealously as he pines to be the lead actor in a play, but as the story continued and he began to open up to Alex, I realized he was so much more than he showed the world. I loved how he shows his true self to Alex and I adored the way their relationship developed as the story continued. They have a friendship and a love that definitely cannot be denied between them and I was swept up into their story, and was saddened when the book came to an end. I also appreciated how both Alex and Julian’s characters evolved throughout the story. Both men do some serious soul searching, sacrifices are made and they mature into better men.

Fans and new readers of Jane Davitt will not be disappointed in this book! Spoken from the Heart is a heart-warming, captivating story that will satisfy those who really love a sweet, sexy, romantic read. I know my heart was smitten by these characters and their story and I anxiously await Ms. Davitt’s next book.

Berry Blue: Lessons Learned by TC Blue

Title: Berry Blue: Lessons Learned
Author: TC Blue
Publisher: Torquere Books
Pages: 283
POV: 3rd Person
Sub-Genre: May/December Romance
Kissses: 4.5

Blurb:

Peter Jamison has spent half his life believing he betrayed his first love, so when Dex is suddenly back in his life, he’s thrilled. Sure, they have their problems. They’re not the same young men they were before. They’ve grown and changed, been molded by their lives and circumstances into completely different people, but there’s still the echo of their previous relationship. It might not be enough for some people to build a relationship on, but they’re happy.
Leonard Dumfries is a lot of things. School teacher. Martial arts student. Father. He’s also thirty-nine and still single. When he finds out that the super-hot hunk he met at his own birthday party is not only involved with someone but is also his friend Riley’s uncle, Leonard is disappointed but still willing to be just friends with the man.
Life is pretty good for everyone, right up until it’s not. When Peter’s world starts to crumble around his ears, it’s up to Leonard — with a little help from friends and family — to step in with a more-than-friendly shoulder and maybe, possibly, find his own happiness while trying to ensure Peter’s, too.

Review:

I enjoyed Berry Blue: Lessons Learned from the first page. The characters are entertaining, and I loved that the author brought Riley and Kelly back as secondary characters. It was easy to like both Leonard and Peter and I wondered how the author was going to handle the situation with Dex. I am sure that like me other readers will want to smack Dex when they learn more about the man and will be glad to see the last of him. I found the fact that the author had Leonard’s and Peter’s relationship start out as friends, even though Leonard was feeling something more, lent a realistic air to the story. It also made the transition from friends to lovers more believable as their relationship already had such a strong chemistry.

The men have a few speed bumps they have to overcome but the author made sure to throw a lot of hot times in there as well. The multitude of secondary characters, many the readers have met before, keep the story moving along nicely. Like many of TC Blue’s stories, Berry Blue: Lessons Learned has found its place on my keeper shelve.

And what of the parade of hot guys that constantly come in and out of their lives? Only time will tell if Tommy has actually met the man of his dreams or if he’s simply allowed himself to be swept up by a passing sensation…a Twinsation.

Review:

I’m a big fan of Mr. Erno’s and have many of his stories in my library. I am always glad to see he has another story out and try to grab it right away. The first thing I want to let readers know about Twinsational is that despite the title, this is not a twincest story. Something that may be important for some readers to know ahead of time. The next thing is that this is a hard story for me to review. I liked the characters. Tommy’s innocence made me want to protect him from himself. Darren came across as the perfect choice for Tommy, while his twin brother, Michael, was the typical player. The story is hot and the various pairings intense. The story moves fast with a couple of twists that ended up surprising me.

All that being said, I also felt as if the story was just starting when it came to an abrupt end. Even after finishing the book a few days back I am unsure how I feel about that. On the author’s website Twinsational is listed as book one and I hope that Mr. Erno plans on revisiting Tommy and his boyfriend again.

Marrick’s Promise by Kim Dare

Title: Marrick’s Promise
Author: Kim Dare
Publisher: Resplendence Publishing
Pages: 115
POV: 3rd
Sub-Genre: Shifter-Light D/s-Menage
Kisses: 4

Blurb:

Marrick thinks that being thrown to the lions will be the ultimate adrenaline rush, and he’s not disappointed. But his plan is to try everything life has to offer once. He has no intention of visiting the lions again.

Blaine and Luther don’t expect to give any of the human sacrifices they share another thought once they leave the den. This man’s different. They have no intention of letting this one go. The only question is, while they are willing to share Marrick with each other, are they willing to share each other with a human who could become as important to each of them as they are to each other?

Review:

Blaine and Luther are two characters that were introduced to us in Ryland’s Sacrifice, they were described as playful cubs who loved to play with one another more than anything and often times they were kept under the watchful eye of the pack leader to be sure they treated the human’s gently. These two lions, though young in the pack are just as powerful as their older pack mates, so they must be told and taught how to treat a human. Then they meet Marrick, who is the latest “human sacrifice” thrown to the lions. Now, Marrick is one man who is full of spunk, full of life, and he’s into the D/s end of things as far as sex goes. He has a mind of his own, knows what he wants and doesn’t have a problem voicing that. On the night he is thrown to the lions he’s taken by both Blaine and Luther, and Marrick couldn’t have been happier.

The two lions find themselves overtaken with the human, they grow very possessive over him, because it is their job to keep him safe. Now, generally when a human is thrown to the pack for a night they do what they do and leave and that’s that. The human has cash he needed and the lions the pleasure of having a human for that short time. With Marrick, that was not to be the case, because he just so happens to be the mate of the two lions, turning this story into a MMM. But because Arslan, the pack leader has continuously pounded into his packs heads that lions must be gentle with their humans, the two lions, who at times reminded me of young twenty-something men just waiting to pounce on something they shouldn’t, can’t seem to please their human mate. Marrick needs “pain” to feel alive and his lion mates are afraid to give him that, so he leaves them. The two lions visit Marrick’s parents and they find out why Marrick is the pain/thrill seeker that he is, and let me tell you, I get it. If that were me? I’d be the same way. So, now we have the two lions having to rethink their teachings from their leader because if they can’t give Marrick what he “needs” he won’t stay with them.

It’s a good story overall and I did come to really like the three together but I’m going to openly say that Marrick needed a solid spanking over how he acted at times. Just sayin’.

A Watched Demon Always Boils by Katherine Halle

Title: A Watched Demon Always Boils
Author: Katherine Halle
Publisher: Torquere Press
Pages: 26
Characters: Lane, Greg
POV: 3rd
Sub-Genre: Contemporary, Paranormal, Romance
Kisses: 3

Blurb:

Lane is a professional photographer hired by Greg to do a photo shoot and magazine spread about his restaurant in hopes of making his business more profitable. Trouble is Greg’s got a demon on his back, literally. Now Lane must race against time to save Greg from the demon and convince him that Lane isn’t crazy; he wants to help Greg.

Take one stubborn chef, a determined photographer, mix in an evil demon and a slightly crazy best friend, and watch it come to a boil, every time.

Review:

When Lane stopped by Greg’s restaurant for the first time, he overheard Greg telling his head waiter that he needed to do something that would generate some press about it. Greg hoped he could think of something that would bring more patrons to dine there. Seeing an opportunity he couldn’t resist, Lane promptly introduces himself and offers his services as a professional freelance photographer to do a spreadsheet of the restaurant and of Greg himself. Greg readily agrees and two weeks later, Lane finds himself taking pictures of Greg and the everyday happenings at the restaurant. Two weeks later, Lane spent an interesting and eventful day taking pictures of some of the crazy antics that goes on there and of the handsome Greg.

Lane’s pretty pleased with the way they turned out, but is surprised when he thinks he sees a dark shadow hovering over Greg in some of the pictures. Hoping it’s a fluke, he meets with Greg and takes more profile pictures of him, promising him some good pictures to pick from, and the promise of a home cooked supper from Greg himself. When Lane returns home and develops the pictures, he realizes that there is an ominous figure hovering over Greg and he immediately knows that Greg is in danger. Since Lane also has the gift of being able to spot and photograph demons, he’s also teamed himself up with his friend, Lexie, and they hunt demons. As Lexie and Lane make plans to hunt and kill the demon that is haunting over Greg, he hopes they will be in time to save the chef that has wormed his way into his life.

I really enjoyed this short story. It was very fast paced and I liked the characters that the author created. I personally thought that the premise of the story was unique and interesting, but I really wish the story had been longer. Because it is a short story, there isn’t much of a backstory for any of the characters, and even though we get to know Lane a little, Greg himself was more of a mystery. There also aren’t many scenes in the story with Greg and Lane together, but it is obvious when they are around each other, there is a strong chemistry between them. Having said that, I think Lane acted a little gun-shy when it came to starting anything with Greg. There is no kissing and they barely touch in this book, so if you are looking for a heavy romance, this is not the short story for you to read.

BUT, it does end with the possibility that Lane and Greg will start to see each other, so there is the definite hope that they might act on the attraction they feel for each other. It’s very obvious the men really like each other and could easily be both friends and lovers. I really wish this had been a full-length novel. There is so much that could be said about Lane, Greg, hunting demons and even Lexie. I really hope that one day the author decides to write more about them. I really liked this author’s writing style. She has a creative voice that kept me interested in the book; I just wish they had been more of it. If you are looking for a quick, fun and interesting tale of a sexy chef and a demon hunter, this would be a good story to pass the time with.

H.C. Brown stopped in and had a cup of tea with us!!

Please note that we interviewed H.C. not too long ago however, she sure has been busy and she wanted to share that with us here at Top 2 Bottom. We are thrilled to welcome her back. Some questions asked before now have an updated answer. Enjoy!!

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions, H.C. Brown. Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

Well, instead of the usual bio, I’ll tell you a little about myself. I live close to the beach in Queensland Australia. I’m married to a very wonderful man. I’ve had 24 books published and have had many best sellers. This year I was delighted to receive a nomination for Favorite Author in the TRS CAPA Awards for excellence in romance writing. Two of my novels, Cyborg Doms:Fane and Love Revisited Nash & Paul also received nominations. I write in a variety of genres but always romance with big alpha males and happy endings.

What was your first book and how long did it take to get it published?

My first published book was Murder by Design published in Australia by Pocketbook Publishing. The story, a murder mystery was the first book I ever submitted. Previously, I wrote fantasy YA stories for a group of internet readers.

Well, my submission was accepted and the book published in 2006.

When did you start writing m/m romance?

I wrote Purr-fect Seduction in 2007 and although I loved the story, it needed a sub-plot. I introduced Nox the King of the Fae and had him as a constant throughout the Pride Brother’s Series. The Fae in my series are gay or bisexual living in a world where any couplings are considered normal and encouraged. Although Nox has a constant too, his lover is Allure the Fair and they indulge in M/M/M couplings.

What about this genre interested you the most?

The sex of course, lol. Then the BDSM added a taste I hadn’t realized I would enjoy writing so much. I think having wonderful friends in both camps, so to speak, has helped a lot. I write tender love stories, the sex is an essential part of my plots.

How long did it take you to get published? How many books have you written thus far?

I had my first submission accepted so not long at all. I have 24 published books to date, another 4 waiting to be submitted. I’ve had three rejections— all now published and all three best sellers.

Do you write full time?

Yes.

On a typical writing day, how would you spend your time?

Mornings, housework, walk on the beach, promotion emails etc, then I write every day, from noon ’till six. Evenings is husband time.

Do you write right through or do you revise as you go along?

I write a chapter then revise. Next I send the chapter off to my critique partner. On editing days, I don’t write, I prefer to do critiques etc. I don’t think writing and editing go well together.

When it comes to plotting, do you write freely or plan everything in advance?

I never plan a single word. I think I would go mad working to a structured plot.

What kind of research do you do before and during a new book?

This depends on the story. I write in a wide variety of genres. The historical stories take a lot of time but I do research as I go usually. If the story is contemporary— say a BDSM club, I take the time to visit and soak up the atmosphere.

How much of yourself and the people you know manifest into your characters?

Well, Dare in Purr-fect Seduction is close to my husband’s persona. I hadn’t realized how much until I read the story again recently. Like Dare, I know my man would walk through fire to get to me if I needed him.

How do you approach development of your characters? Where do you draw the line?

I write strong alpha male hero’s but with a flaw, a vulnerability. I could never write a cruel or vicious hero.
My secondary male characters( M/M stories) are usually subs with an attitude or men slightly confused about their sexuality.

My female characters are always smart, loyal and would fight to the death for their man. I don’t have tough ‘I can fight my own battles’ female characters, they may talk back but they are feminine all the way.

How long does it take for you to complete a book you would allow someone to read?

Well this depends on length. 75K four months or so. 60K three months a novella a couple of weeks I guess.

Writers often go on about writer’s block. Do you ever suffer from it, and what measures do you take to get past it?

Not writer’s block, my characters demand to have their story told. The stresses and commitments of life are the only thing that prevents me from writing. I think if I ever had writer’s block it would mean my story is so boring my Muse has fallen asleep and I would delete and start again.

When someone reads one of your books for the first time, what do you hope they gain, feel or experience?

I really want my readers to understand that love is love no matter who you are or what flavor you prefer, as long as the sex is between consenting adults.

Can you share three things you’ve learned about the business of writing since your first publication?

1. Everything in publishing takes time.
2. You need a very thick skin.
3.Make every story better than the one before.

Does the title of a book you’re writing come to you as you’re writing it, or does it come before you even begin the first sentence?

I always have a title first, then the characters names.

How would you describe your sense of humor? Who and what makes you laugh?

I have a wicked sense of humor. Anything naughty makes me laugh . . . I’ve never grown up.

What is the most frequently asked H.C. question?

When is your next book scheduled for release?

What are you working on now?

Well, now that A Tryst of Fate is published, I’ll polish Hurt Me Good a M/M BDSM, finish Vanilla Boy and Nox #4 in the Pirde Brothers Series. (YAY…BDSM!!)

What was the best piece of advice you’ve received with respect to the art of writing? How did you implement it into your work?

This is a difficult question. Jill Nobel of Noble Romance Publishing helped me polish my craft. I am very fortunate to have had someone willing to take the time to point out to me how to improve my writing from day one. My critique partner David Kentner (KevaD) is another big influence. Having someone to kick your butt into shape is a big help.

When it comes to promotion, what lengths have you gone to in order to increase reader-awareness of your work?

I am a very approachable author and like to keep in contact with my fans. I like doing interviews, blog posts and the usual Facebook and other author pages.

To be honest, I believe readers take notice of reviews, so making my books available to reviewers is very important.

Writing is obviously not just how you make your living, but your life-style as well. What do you do to keep the creative “spark” alive – both in your work and out of it?

I have a very creative mind, stories pop in unannounced. I think walking on the beach helps and listening to music.

What pros and cons surround the e-publishing industry, and how do you envision the future of e-publishing?

I like the fast pace of e-publishing, the instant availability of books. Looking at the way many of the larger print publishers are embracing e-books I believe this is the future and as many e-book publishers offer print on demand everyone is satisfied.

Lord & Master

Reynold’s chest squeezed at the thought of his sweet, innocent love in the hands of a brute. “Give me another chance, you have my word, I will never hurt you again.”

“My feelings in this matter are of no consequence. I am bound to Hale for the next ten years.”

Waving his hand dismissively, Reynold met David’s gaze. “It does not signify.” He shrugged. “Every man has his price, and I will meet any cost to have you back where you belong—with me.” He turned toward David. “I made a mistake, and I’m sorry. It is your turn to forgive me. You do forgive me don’t you?”

“Yes, I have long recognized the error of my ways.” Lord David smiled ruefully. “In truth, my heart has never stopped aching for you.”

“Then allow me to pay off your debt and end this farce of a contract.”

“Reynold . . . this is a delicate situation and one out of my control.” Lord David clasped his hands under his coat tails. “Hale is a greedy man, and he has my mark on a contract. He will never allow me to leave him—at any price.”
A light breeze moved the blond curls pressed to Lord David’s cheek. Reynold bit back the need to touch the silky strands. “How did you allow this happen?

“I met Hale at Whites, and by the time I sat down to play faro, I was well into my cups.” Lord David met Reynold’s gaze and sighed. “I missed you, and after a year of celibacy I needed company . . . a master. I made an agreement with Hale. He covered my debt, and in doing so, concealed my disgrace from my father. I had no idea I had signed my life away to a sadist, until after an evening drinking with Hale, I woke up tied to a bed in Beechcroft House.”

“Walk with me.” Reynold turned and moved toward the flower seller. “I will invite you to dine with Lord John tomorrow, to discuss the purchase of a horse to replace Charger. Hale will not suspect we have other plans to make.” Reynold took a coin from his purse and tossed it to the flower girl. He took a small posy from her basket, and buried his nose in the fragrant violets.

“You have a notion that will free me from Hale?” Lord David whispered. “This will be complicated. He is not my only master; in truth, I serve a variety of his friends at Beechcroft House.” He followed Reynold down the pathway. “They each carry a share of my debt. They give me no time to recuperate . . . they are less than beasts. I am ashamed of what I have endured since you went abroad. I was an inexperienced fool with no knowledge of Hale’s predilections.” He bit his bottom lip. “In truth, the irony is it’s only by Hale’s generosity that I’m allowed to attend the season. He made an offer to my father to instruct me in livestock—a ruse to have me under his whip night and day. I had no choice but to agree, because if I made any protest, Hale threatened to inform my father of the details of our contact. My future is set; I am to live at Kingston with Hale.” He pushed a lock of hair off his face. “As my father believes I am lusting after a whore, he agreed to release me from my obligations at home with the proviso I escorted my sister for the season. I now find that Hale has moved into the De Vere, and I am obliged to attend to his needs.”

A shiver ran down Reynold’s back. A group of smelly old fobs had brutalized his gentle lover. His fingers curled into a fist. “Does he know about our relationship?”

“No. I would never tell anyone of our secret.” Lord David frowned. “Of course, I know you share our confidences with Lord John. I regret I cannot remove the jealousy I hold toward that man. I blame Lord John for coming between us, and I honestly believe I had due cause.” He took a watch out of his pocket to check the time. “The man looks on you with doe eyes. Have you had his arse since you returned home?”

Reynold tipped back his head and laughed. “Jealousy becomes you, sweetness.” He buried his nose in the violets again. “Yes, I’ve had Johnny once since my return to London. If I had found you sooner, my love, I would have had you bound and under my whip the moment I stepped back on English soil. Lord John offered his services to a desperate man, and as far as regarding me with love, that notion is in your mind. The man has more lovers than he can accommodate.” He gazed into David’s eyes. “We both have our needs, and it is evident you did not remain celibate for me did you?”
“You cast me aside.” Lord David’s hands closed into fists.

“An argument we both regret.” Reynold shrugged. “I am here to make amends, David—I’ve given you my apology. Christ you know full well, Lord John is an old lover but it is you I crave, David . . . your taste . . .your kiss. You must believe I have never stopped loving you. I took no lovers during my commission, but the body is weak, and I admit to one afternoon with Lord John—one afternoon in three years with an old friend is hardly significant.”

“Then for Christ’s sake, save me from this hell, Reynold.” Lord David grasped Reynold’s arm briefly. “I fear Hale and what he will make me endure next. His idea of pleasure does not include his slave. My masters are brutal. I have changed. I have lost the trust between master and slave I cherished with you. After Hale’s brutality, I must be honest with you. Hale has destroyed every part of me. I am but a shell of the man you left behind. In truth, sex will never be the same between us.” David turned to walk back to Sarah. “When you know the truth of it, the depraved acts I have performed for my masters, you will not want me back.”

Walking beside Lord David, Reynold brushed the back of his hand against the man’s fingers in a feather light touch. “I do want you. Nothing you did with Hale matters to me. I want you away from Hale and with me, forever.” He heard David’s sharp intake of breath and turned to meet his gaze. “We will speak later, and I will convince you of my love.”

A Tryst of Fate

Colt sat in the carriage, staring out of the window in amazement. Okay, so the movies captured the costumes of the period, but being here, in the midst of the reality had quickly become a completely different ballgame. Fuck, no one ever talked about the smell. The stink from the fishmongers, the men selling dead rabbits on sticks, not to
mention the rancid smell of unwashed bodies, seeped into the carriage.

The intensity of the stench increased with each moment they rattled along in a bone-jarring journey that surpassed any ride at the fairground. Horse dung lay in squashed clumps on the road, dog excrement littered the sidewalk, eau d’ horse wafted by with each passing coach.

Colt batted away the flies crawling and buzzing around the carriage; each maggot-breeding bluebottle attempted to crawl up his nose or fly into his mouth. He covered his face and glanced at Alexander’s amused expression. “What?”
“Cover your nose if the pong offends you.”Alexander plucked a scented silk handkerchief from his sleeve and handed it to Colt. “This place, is it very different from London in your time?”

Pressing the lilac-scented cloth to his nose, Colt met Alexander’s gaze. “Hell yeah. It stinks here. I can’t believe you actually buy food from these street vendors.”

“Of course we do. The servants buy supplies for the kitchen at the market and the cook prepares the food. Or I dine at my club. Where do you buy your food?” Alexander gave Colt a blank expression.

“From supermarkets, delis… um… shops. We have health restrictions for anyone selling food because flies carry disease. The food here is crawling with flies, it’s a wonder anyone survives.”

“It will be a wondrous adventure, seeing your time.” Alexander grinned. “Now, my friend, you must try to hold your tongue should we meet any fellows I know at White’s. Remember my lessons, do as I do. The greeting is a slight bow and the words ‘your servant, sir’ on meeting or being introduced.” He cleared his throat. “To say, ‘thank you, buddy, I owe you one’, is not the appropriate address to any servant. In fact, you need not say anything. They do not expect gratitude for service—they receive a wage. Though, if you are given excellent service, you might give them a coin.” He met Colt’s gaze. “And I beg you, do not use vulgar language. A gentleman does not swear in polite society. You might say ‘Christ’ if you must, amongst gentlemen, but you would do well to curb your profanity if you possibly can. I shall have enough to do explaining your accent and your outlandish manner.”

A Time to Live by H.C. Brown

Title: Time to Live
Author: H.C. Brown
Publisher: Noble Romance
Pages: 35
POV: 3rd
Sub-Genre: BDSM
Kisses: 3.5

Blurb:

Seth Bannock is living a lie. Nothing in his life is working out. He likes women . . . he respects women . . . but when he tries to kiss a woman and she does that tongue thing, he wants to spew.

Confused by his body’s reaction to the men at his gym, Seth seeks help from the only gay club he knows—Floggers. Is the man crazy? Seeking answers, the sweet, vanilla virgin marches into the BDSM club to speak to the owner Rio Knight.

Realization that he has been on the wrong team all his life comes in the form of a six-foot-seven Adonis by the name of Matt Duffey. Instantly attracted to the leather-clad alpha male, Seth must leave his old life behind and embrace his newfound sexuality.

Seth thought his life had complications before he met Matt, but nothing comes close to the rollercoaster ride in the big dom’s arms.

Review:

Seth Bannock is that type of character you just want to snatch out of the book and have a one on one with. He’s adorable, he’s sweet, and he’s so lost it’s scary. I say that because there he was on a date with a woman, and one he liked a lot until she wanted to kiss him. Oh did she get angry and boy did he find himself in a state of confusion. He knew then that he “must” be gay because though he liked women, he didn’t want them sexually. Seth works as a body trainer at a gym and he realizes that he finds more interest in the men and all they have to offer by way of looks and such, than a woman. Period.

So, since he has no one to talk to about this newfound awareness of himself he decides to head to a local gay bar to ask questions, however this isn’t a typical bar. It’s a BDSM club. OYE. So, I’m reading the story and thinking. Wait. He just discovers he “may” be gay and he goes to a BDSM club for advice. Okay, let’s see how this works out for him.

Thankfully for him he manages to end up in the capable hands of the owner of the club Rio Knight and that dear sweet Dom does not steer the unsure man in the wrong direction. The only question I have here though is this. Just finding out that Seth is gay, does Seth also know he’s a sub at heart? I just don’t understand why he went to a BDSM club to ask questions. Anyway, he meets Rio and Rio is described as an Adonis and a big one at that. Rio answers the questions Seth has very calmly and then introduces him to Matt who is a Dom and who is looking for his own sub and the fact that Seth is a virgin by every sense of the word, Rio just knows this is a perfect set up.

Matt is a good guy, professes love rather quickly, but this is a short book, so it’s to be expected. He’s somewhat of a talker as well and at one point I wanted to slap him silly. Promise the new sub the world and then disappear for a week! The nerve. Well, we find out why and we also find two men who grow together as a couple, and as a Dom/sub.

It’s a cute light BDSM read, nothing in it rough. So, if you don’t care for BDSM due to some of the power play that goes on within those stories, I think this one is gentle enough for you to learn a bit and enjoy as well.
