Right guy. Wrong time.

Deputy Joe Peterson understood the risks when he got involved with ex-con Kabe Varghese. He didn’t, however, see fit to warn Kabe. Now, in the middle of searching for the killer of a local boy, he has to contend with his career and his relationship spinning out of control. Solving the case may be easier than repairing broken trust.

Review:

Spin Out is the second story in the Deputy Joe series and since this one picks up shortly after the end of the first book, you really do need to read Hard Fall first. Readers will find it very easy to fall right back into the world the author has created with these two. The closeness between them is still there, as is the intense passion. However, the relationship, which is only a few months old, is starting to run into some problems. The outside pressure the men, especially Joe, are facing puts a toll on the relationship, one that they may have a hard time coming back from. In fact while reading Spin Out I began to worry that the author planned on keeping them apart until the next installment. The fact that the author is not letting these two continue in a honeymoon stage lends some reality to the story.

As with the first story Spin Out also has a bit of mystery woven into it. While the men are out hunting, Kabe literally stumbles onto a dead body. While the reader may not be overly surprised by who the guilty party is, the reasoning behind the killing is sure to shock. As Joe investigates the crime he is once again forced to deal with the conflicts between his faith and personal choices. I knew a gay gentleman who was also Mormon and the struggle he went through is very reminiscent of what Joe is facing in this series. I also found the fact that Joe continued to be plagued by problems at work because of his relationship with Kabe a little disheartening and hope that things between the two will be looking up soon. According to the author’s web site there are at least two more stories left in this series and I for one hope we will see a new installment soon.

Nice review, James, and sounds like a good book – I have to ask, though, is this bdsm? I confess, I am a wuss.
